Asher's POV

I sat up in my bed and groaned. My back was still aching from where that kid touched me, but the pain had gone down drastically. I stretched my arms, leaning back slightly as I did so. I froze as my knuckles brushed against something soft.

I whipped my head around and was smacked by the mysterious object. I blinked a few times and shot up off my bed. The object followed. I spun around a few times, trying to get a good look at whatever was following me, but all that accomplished was knocking my lamp over. It landed on the floor with a heavy thud.

I stopped spinning and looked up at myself in the mirror. My eyes widened as I realized what the object was.

"Shit!" I yelled, grabbing my hair and pacing around my room. "Shit, shit, shit!"

I stood in front of my mirror once again and tightly gripped the sides of the desk placed below the mirror. I stared at the wings protruding from my back. They were pitch black and had a slight shine to them.

I tentatively turned my head and and stroked one of my wings. It was softer than I remembered a feather to be.

I grit my teeth and pulled on my wing. Immeasurable pain shot through my left shoulder blade and arm. I bit my tongue to keep from screaming as I heard a pop come from where the wing was connected to my body.

I let go panting once the skin started to tear. I can't do this, I thought, looking back at the mirror. I haven't felt pain like this, and I'm a demon!

I inhaled and moved my arm, preparing for the pain that was soon to follow, only for there to be none. Confused, I turned my head back around and stared at where the wing was connected to my shoulder blades.

The wing was back in its proper position, and the area where the skin tore was healed. My eyes widened and I turned back to face myself in the mirror.

Okay, Ash, I thought, this is nothing. This is fine. You can hide it, go back to your job, and no one will find out.

Suddenly, my door opened and Domi walked inside. "Hey, Ash-"

We made eye contact through the mirror. I swallowed nervously and turned around. Domi's gaze traveled from my eyes to my wings and back again. He started to back up, but I ran forward, dragged him in by the front of his shirt, and locked the door behind him.

Domi shook my hand off of his shirt and started to pace around my room as I did ten minutes earlier. He stopped in the middle of my room and faced me, a look of complete shock and disbelief written across his features.

"Wha-Ash-How-" he sputtered, dragging a hand through his dark brown curls.

"I don't know! I just woke up and these were attached to me!" I said, gesturing to the wings taking up half my bedroom.

"Well, can you rip them off?"

"I tried! And not only did it hurt worse than holy water, but-" I lowered my voice. The walls were soundproof, but you could never be sure. "the wing I tried to take off first repaired itself."

"REPAI-" Domi slapped a hand over his mouth and lowered his voice. "It, your wing, repaired itself?"

I nodded and swallowed.

Domi ran a hand through his hair again. "Well, what can you do about your...uh... problem?"

"Keep it hidden. I'm not telling anyone, and neither are you," I said, pointing at Domi. When he opened his mouth to argue, I pressed on. "Do you have any idea of what they'll do to me? Remember the story of Jaxon?"

Jaxon Nuvall was an Underclassmen-Possessor, or a U-P for short, who had grown wings. His observer found out, who reported it to his overseer. Jaxon was taken away to the King's castle, never to be seen again.

Domi exhaled through his nose and nodded grimly. "Okay. I won't tell anyone."

I let out a sigh of relief.

"But you can't make the same mistakes-" his voice dropped to a whisper, "-Jaxon made." His voice returned to its normal volume. "Can you hide them?"

"How am I supposed to do that?"

"Um, can you fold them?"

"What?"

"You know, like how a bird folds its wings against its sides, can you do that with yours?"

"Hold on, let me try." I tried wiggling my shoulders, but that only lifted me into the air. I tried tensing and relaxing various muscles, but that did

Domi tried to forcefully push them against my back, but to no avail. I sighed and tried to sit in my chair, only for that to be impossible because of my wings.

I shot up and groaned in frustration. "Domi, what the fuck am I supposed to do?! I'm gonna have to stay in this room forever! I wish these things would just go away!" By the end of my rant, I was practically screaming.

Domi walked over and placed a hand on my shoulder. "It's okay, Ash."

"But it's not o-fucking-kay!" I put my head in my hands. My voice dropped to barely over a whisper. "I wish these...things would just stay hidden."

I heard a rustling behind me. Domi started shaking me and bouncing up and down. "Ash! Ash, you did it!"

"Did what?" I muttered, turning my head to look at him.

"Your wings! They finally folded!"

I craned my neck to look over my shoulder, and sure enough, my wings were folded neatly against my back.

I smiled and looked back at Domi, only for black fabric to block my vision.

"Here, put this shirt on. Let's see if the outline of your wings show."

I pulled the fabric over my head and glanced at myself in the mirror. All good, you can't tell anything's out of the ordinary, I thought. That's good.

Domi nodded his approval as my phone started playing "Demons". I picked it up and listened to the message.

"Asher Monrico is to report to Room 666 in Sector 420 in thirteen minutes."

I hung up and looked at Domi. "I better head down there now," I said.

"Yeah, let's just hope your wings stay hidden until you get back here."
