I pulled into the pet store parking lot and got out of the car, holding the door open as Storm got out. I whistled for her to follow me into the store. She obeyed, to my surprise, and stuck close to me the whole time.
I entered the store and walked over to the aisle with the collars and leashes. I looked at the various sizes before grabbing a random one and holding it up to my dog. I did this a few more times before finding the right size. I picked up a leash and headed to the dog food aisle. I grabbed the biggest bag available and went to the check-out. As I was walking to the line, I passed by dog beds. I decided to get that, too.
I left the store and went back to my car. Storm hopped in the back, and I drove back to my house. I got a bowl and filled it with dog food and did the same for water. I went up to my room, did the homework for my classes, and pulled a book off my shelf. I opened it and started to read, not noticing it was after nine o'clock at night by the time Domi got home.
"Asher! Come on, we need to go out! I'm hungry!" Domi whined from the bottom of the stairs.
"Yeah, yeah. I'm coming."
"Where do you want to go to eat?" Domi asked, pulling out of the driveway. Storm had already eaten and was now asleep in her bed, so we weren't worried about her.
I shrugged. I probably wasn't going to eat anyway. I hated the food from the human realm, and I especially hated the fact I had occassional pangs of hunger for it. Other demons seemed to enjoy the food a lot though, Domi being one of them.
Domi pulled into a random diner and hopped out of the car excitedly. I followed more slowly. Something isn't right here, but I can't tell what.
As we went through the door, my eyes saw the last two nincompoops I thought I would see here. Domi saw me roll my eyes and followed my line of sight to see Marcus and Tyler with a circle of friends.
The same friends that hurt Winnie.
The server lead us to a booth diagonal to them. I sat on the side facing them, Domi to my left. Luckily, none of those morons saw us. As she handed us our menus, a loud chorus of laughter erupted from the table. I tuned in to their conversation as I scanned the various sandwiches.
"Wow, the nerve of that guy! I can't believe he did that!"
"I know!" Tyler.
I smirked. They're talking about me.
"What I want to know is why you didn't do anything," Marcus.
I nodded my head in acknowledgment of the waitress setting my water in front of me. Domi started up a quiet conversation with her. She giggled and scribbled something on a napkin and handed it to him. Domi grinned at me and pointed at the napkin, mouthing "Score!"
Sometimes I forget he's over four hundred years old.
"Have you seen him? Of course, I didn't do anything! I feared for my life!"
More laughter ensued. As it quieted down, Tyler started opening up his big mouth again. "You know, I bet we could take him."
I choked on the water I was drinking. When one of them looked over, I held up the menu to block my face. I only put it down when they went back to their conversation.
"What the ever-loving fuck do you mean, Tyler?"
"Hear me out, David." So the big one is David, nice to know. "There's one of him and five of us. Even though he's about six foot six—"
"I would say he's more about six foot eight."
"Shut up, Tony!"
"Guys! Listen! We outnumber him. I don't know about you, but I don't like it when a new kid marches in like he owns the place. I think we ought to teach him a lesson," Tyler finished.
I had to stop myself from laughing out loud. Yeah, as if they could do anything to me, I thought. I thanked the lady when she put my sandwich down in front of me. I guess Domi went ahead and ordered for both of us. I picked apart my sandwich as I listened to the rest of the conversation, ignoring Domi when he frowned at me.
"That's some wishful thinking, Tyler. But have you not heard the rumors about this guy? They say he took on about seven people at once and beat them up so badly they had to be put in the hospital. I don't know about you guys, but even if the rumors aren't true, I'm not going to risk it," David said.
"Maybe we don't have to. Have you guys noticed anything strange about him? Compared to other people?" Marcus asked. I narrowed my eyes at his comment as I reluctantly picked up my sandwich after seeing the glare on Domi's face. What is he getting at?
When no one responded, he continued. "The Freak. He doesn't care. I mean, he does care. About him. He doesn't care about his weird eye thing."
My eyes narrowed even more and my fingers clenched my sandwich tightly as I slowly chewed my food. He better fucking not.
"We could use the Freak to get to him, make him do what we want. Tyler, you and I have nearly all our classes with him. Tony, David, and Mike have the classes with him you and I don't. We could all blackmail Asher using the Freak."
I was seeing red. They better fucking not. If they hurt him again—
My wings started to itch again, much worse this time. I stood up and motioned for Domi to follow. He threw a couple of bills on the table before exiting the building. I didn't get in the car, instead, I ran to the back of the restaurant and to the alley. I was panting heavily, trying to keep my wings against my back. It was of no use.
I guess they could only be repressed for so long. I ran deeper into the alley where I was sure no one could see me and tore my shirt off, not wanting to shred it to pieces. I allowed my wings to unfurl. It was almost as if they weren't there, they were so dark. They reflected the dim moonlight before lifting me up and carrying me off to Satan knows where.
