"Thanks for the ride, Ash," Winnie said as he let his backpack fall to the ground.
I mimicked his action and sat down in his desk chair. "No problem."
When I was about to drive away after dropping Winnie off at his house, he asked if I wanted to come inside. Since his parents weren't home, I figured it was safe. Sam was starting to worry me.
"Can I ask you something?" Winnie asked, sitting on his bed. I nodded and gestured for him to go on. "How did you become a demon?"
I inhaled sharply. Winnie started to say something along the lines of "You don't have to tell me, sorry if I crossed a line!" but I held up a hand, stopping him before he could say anything. "It's okay. I don't mind.
"There are three ways to become a demon. One way is to make a deal with one. Another is to be born one. The last one I already told you about." Winnie brought his knees to his chest. "When you become a demon, you keep all your past memories, but the longer you're in hell, the more they fade away. I can't remember much from my past life. Only my name and very little of how I died. I don't remember how, or why, but I ended up in the middle of the road. A car was coming and ran full force into me. I died on impact."
"How old were you?"
"Seven or eight. I grew up in hell."
"How long have you been in hell?"
"Ten years in Human time, one hundred in Hell time. Hell time is different. Longer, yet slower at the same time. Seconds are minutes, and minutes are seconds simultaneously."
Winnie nodded before turning to me again, realization lighting up his face. "Domi isn't actually your father, is he?"
I shook my head. "No. He's my best friend and roommate."
"How long has Domi been a demon? In Human time?"
"Four hundred years. I think he made a deal."
Winnie nodded and rested his head back on his knees. Suddenly, he scootched closer and uncrossed his legs, raising his head up at the same time. "What can you tell me about demons in general?" When all I did was look at him, he continued. "I mean, I have to learn about you before I can help you."
I nodded and moved beside him on his bed. "Okay, so there are three classes of demons. Underclass, Upperclass, and Guards. The Underclass have free reign and can travel wherever they please as long as they obey the rules. The Upperclass can only travel within Hell unless the need arises that they go to the Human world. The Guards protect all the gates to Hell and direct souls to the places they need to be. They are also in charge of the Upper and Underclassmen. Guards are never allowed to leave Hell unless given special permission.
"The rules I mentioned earlier are: Do not kill excessively in one area, do not possess a human unless directed to, and never show your true form to a human. Breaking one of these can result in a time-out or death, depending on the severity."
Winnie nodded in understanding. "What rank were you?"
"Both Domi and I were borderline Underclass to Upperclass. We got specific jobs and began to spend less and less time in the Human realm."
Winnie tilted his head. "Jobs?"
I lifted the corner of my mouth in a smile. "Yeah. My job was to cause random fights between people. Domi's job―well, it's in his name."
"What?"
"Domi's name wasn't always Domi. He just goes by it because he prefers it to Harry. Domi stands for Demon Of Mild Inconveniences. You know when you're charging your phone and the cable is too short to reach the couch where you're sitting? Chances are, he's been there."
Winnie's face held a hint of annoyance before he shook his head. Winnie scooted closer to me until our arms touched. "Should we try getting rid of your wings now? I think I have an idea on how," he said as he cautiously reached his hand up and placed it on my covered wing.
As I was about to respond, I heard a car pull into the driveway. "I think your mom's here," I said as I stood up.
Winnie stood up too and grabbed my hand before dropping it with a light blush. "Where are you going?"
"Home," I answered as I unlocked his window.
Winnie looked hurt. "Why?"
I paused with one foot out the window and one hand on the bottom of the window. I didn't want to tell him that Sam was insane and tried to poison me, so I told him a little lie that wasn't actually a lie because it was kinda true.
"She scares me."
With that, I jumped out of his window and landed on the tree close to his window. I climbed down and hopped in my car to drive home, thankful I thought ahead and parked a street over. I looked in the rearview mirror and smiled to myself as his house disappeared from view.

Wow sorry, this one was short. I had to have a cavity filled (first one in my life) and it wasn't so bad. I told my mom I refused the numbing thing, she looked at me like I was crazy. But it didn't hurt?! Should it have hurt? Or do I have a high tolerance for pain?
Also I have the day off tomorrow so you bet I'll update then :)
