Kara dug around her bag for her phone before finally fishing it out. She dialed Sharon’s number and tapped her fingers against the seat impatiently, waiting for Sharon to answer. “Kara? What’s up?” Sharon finally said as she picked up the phone. “Aren’t you supposed to be out with Glenn?”
“I’m on the way to your place,” Kara said into the phone. “I’ll explain everything when I get there okay?” There was a moment of silence before Sharon replied saying, “Sure. See you soon.” Kara stared out the window, trying to hold back tears as the taxi sped off towards Sharon’s place.
When the taxi pulled up below Sharon’s block, Kara threw the driver a fifty and hopped out of the cab, running over to Sharon who was pacing at the void deck. “What’s wrong?” Sharon asked as she engulfed Kara in a hug.
Kara took a deep breath, tears forming in her eyes. “I can’t do this anymore,” she said, starting to cry. “Hold on,” Sharon said, guiding her over to a bench by the playground. She helped Kara sit down before handing her the pack of tissues she had brought down with her.
“What exactly happened earlier Kara?” Sharon asked. “Glenn brought me… dinner… then in the wine… proposed,” Kara hiccoughed, barely getting the words. “Hold up, Glenn proposed to you?” Sharon asked. Kara nodded and said, “He got down on one knee and everything.”
“So why did you leave?” Sharon asked gently. “Isn’t this a good thing?” Kara shook her head and said, “I’m not ready for all of this Sharon.” Sharon rubbed Kara’s back comfortingly and said, “Are you sure? Both of you seem to really love each other.”
“It’s not just that,” Kara said softly. “I just…” “You what Kara?” Sharon asked. “I’m not sure if he’s making the right decision to marry me,” Kara whispered. “What do you mean he’s not making the right decision?” Sharon asked, tilting Kara’s head up so they were looking each other in the eye.
“Is he sure he wants to marry me?” Kara said softly. “What if I’m not right for him? What if we end up divorced or something?” Sharon grabbed her wrist and said, “Kara, you need to calm down. Take a deep breath and count to ten.”
Kara closed her eyes and took a deep breath. Just then, her phone buzzed and she look down to see a new message from Glenn. “Ignore it,” Sharon said, reaching for the phone and grabbing it from her. “You can reply him later when you’ve thought things through.”
Kara looked at her for a moment before sighing and looking down at the floor. “Look, we can either sit here all night, or you can explain to me why you ran out on Glenn,” Sharon said quietly. Kara sighed and looked up at her before getting up and walking around.
“You know me Sharon,” Kara said. “I think you know what this is about.” “If it’s about you not being good enough for him, you’re wrong Kara,” Sharon said, watching her. “I’ve always told you that.”
“I know, but I don’t feel that way Sharon. I don’t feel like I’m good enough for anyone still. The therapy sessions have helped but I still feel like a burden to others at times. And marrying Glenn, means I’ll be spending the rest of my life with him. What if something goes wrong and he gets sick of me? Or what if he gets sick of my insecurities?” Kara whispered, her eyes getting wet again.
Sharon stood up and walked over to Kara. “Kara, I know you feel that way sometimes, but you have to know that we don’t feel that way about you. We love you for who you are, and without you in our lives, things would really be extremely different. And I’m not just speaking for me, but for Glenn as well,” Sharon said gently.
Kara rolled her eyes and said, “You don’t know what Glenn thinks.” Sharon laughed and shook her head saying, “I do actually. He met me last week to ask me for my permission to propose to you.” “Did he actually do that?” Kara asked in surprise. Sharon nodded and said, “And just in case something like this happened, he asked me to give you this.” Sharon passed her an envelope and said, “I’ll give you some time to read this alone.”
Kara smiled at her before walking over to the swing and sitting down. She tore open the envelope gently and took the letter out.
‘Dear Kara,
I hope it doesn’t have to come to this, and you’ll never have to need to read this letter, but if it does come to it, it doesn’t matter. I need you to know how much I love you. I want to spend the rest of my life with you, and I hope you want to spend the rest of your with me.
Ever since I met you, I’ve changed. And if I’ve noticed it, I’m sure everyone else has too. You’ve brought me a lot of joy in my life, and I’m extremely grateful for that. Honestly, I don’t think anyone has made me this happy, not even Marianne.
I really love spending time with you, be it in the office, lazing around at home or at the beach. I’m a 100% sure I want to spend the rest of my life with you, and I’m hoping you’ll agree to spend our forever with me too.
Love,
Glenn’
Kara looked up, tears flowing down her face. She walked over to Sharon, who was looking at her with a smile. “You okay?” Sharon asked as Kara sat down next to her. Kara nodded and said, “Yeah I’m fine, just a little touched.”
Sharon laughed and said, “I told you he loves you.” Kara sighed and said, “I probably should go and talk to him then.” “Of course you should,” Sharon said, standing up. “Call me if you need anything else alright!”
Kara smiled at Sharon’s retreating figure and looked back down at the letter and smiled to herself. “Looks like I’ve finally found someone who loves me as much as I love them,” Kara said with a small smile.
