Astrid's P.O.V.
I sat down in the only seat left, next to Hiccup, and pulled out my binder. I started writing when I heard the teacher ask me to stand up and introduce myself. I move my lower jaw to the side and scratch my pen in thought as I looked at my paper. I look up as I say, "Hm, no thanks." He looks at me in surprise at my response. "I mean, no disrespect, but you kinda already introduced me. And I have other things I'd rather be doing than be here anyway, so why try to make this my home away from home? I'm miserable here already so, you guys don't exactly need to know me," I say and he writes something down.
"Detention. You got it," I say, looking back at my binder, already knowing the drill. I sense Hiccup looking over my shoulder as the teacher makes class drag on and slam my binder shut, crossing my arms as I lean on my desk and look at him. I take out a note card and write a note.
"Ever heard of this thing called 'privacy'?" I hand it to him and he reads it as I look at the front of the room. Soon, he hands it back and I read it.
"You seem to want a lot of that. (Arrow pointing to the word privacy) Is there a reason?" There were two boxes under his note, one said yes and the other said no.
I scribble out "yes" and hand it back to him.
He gives it back and this time, it reads, "Find me at lunch." I roll my eyes before replying.
"Fat chance." I hear him let out a soft chuckle before turning back to the teacher. I lean back in my chair as I stared into space.
"Astrid," the teacher's voice shocks me out of my thoughts.
"Five," I answer with out thinking. Everyone laughs and giggles as Hiccup looks at me with amusement in his eyes. I close my eyes with a sigh. Dang it. Not again. "Sorry, what was the question?" I ask and the teacher sighs with a roll of his eyes.
"Go easy on her Gobber. She's in a new environment, she probably isn't use to it being like this. It's gotta be different from her old school," Hiccup says.
"'Environment'?" I ask in disgust.
"Yep," he says, popping the "P". I sigh and Gobber repeats the question. I hadn't been paying attention to the lesson; he knew that, so he was ready to move to a different student when I answered correctly.
"She didn't even look at the book," I hear someone whisper. And suddenly the whole class is whispering to each other as Gobber stares at me in shock.
"This is the first day we've gone over this and you weren't even paying attention. How'd you know that?" Hiccup whispers to me.
"Wow, you guys really take me for nothing don't you?" I laugh, suddenly happy to be here. Maybe I can get through the year without making friends after all. The bell rings and everyone runs out. I stay behind and collect my things: my binder and laptop, which is all I brought. When the last person left, I walked over to Gobber who was sitting at his desk.
"Um, sir, I'm sorry for the disrespect I threw at you. I know this isn't a good excuse, but I was hated by the teachers at my old school and they gave me detention for sneezing. I thought you'd be the same so I just lashed out. I'm sorry and it won't happen again," I say and tap my knuckle on the desk before walking out.
"You're excused," he says and I pause at the door.
"Excuse me?" I ask over my shoulder.
"Detention. You're excused from it. I can tell that apology was sincere and genuine so I except it," he says and I smile at him.
