Astrid's P.O.V.
A needle was stabbing my head, putting pressure on my brain and making it throb. I hold my head as I leaned against my motorcycle and waited for Hiccup. Ugh, why did they have to get so close? I shake my head to relieve the pressure and breathe a sigh of relief as Hiccup walks out of the school with some sort of weird, hard-to-read, smile on his lips. I slip my helmet on as he walks in my direction.
"Hey, Astrid, uh-are you busy Friday night?" he asks nervously, rubbing the back of his neck. I start to get nervous. I had heard those words a few times before but the first time was the last time I ever answered. I always ran away.
"Uh, no, I'm not," I say, my voice muffled by the glass of the mask. Why did I answer?! Hiccup pushes the button that makes the glass flip above my head.
"Wanna repeat that?" he asks.
I shake my head, "No, I don't." I push the button again and the glass flips back down to cover my face. He takes my helmet off and smirks.
"Come on. Tell me whatcha said. Yes or no?" he says and I sigh with a roll of my eyes.
"No, I'm not busy Friday night," I say in exasperation. He smiles wildly as he puts my helmet back on my head.
"Great! I'll pick you up at 7!" he says before walking away.
"What?!" I call after him and he turns around, walking backwards to a black car; the one I stopped next to this morning.
He makes a phone symbol with his fingers and puts it to his ear mouthing, "Call me." I stare at him as he gets in his car and starts the engine. My mouth gapes open a little as he drives off, winking at me as he passes me. Eh, jokes on him. I don't have his number and he don't have mine. I flip the glass up for a cool breeze to blow on my face. I get on my bike and start the engine, driving out of the parking lot and doing a wheelie down the street to the corner.
"Whoo-hoo-hoo-hoo!" I shout with happiness as I feel the wind in my face. I stop at the corner and see a cop car drive by. Oh, I am so glade the glass is black. I wave to them as sweat drops form on my face. I shake my head as they nod to me and drive off. I wait for them to turn the corner, pretending to be texting someone in case they look through the rear view mirror. They turn and I ride down the street, swerving parked cars as I wonder why they would park on the side of the street. After a few minutes, I pull into the drive way and park my bike before walking inside, my helmet tucked under my arm as I flipped my hair out of my face.
"Oh, finally! Guess who's been moping around all day," my mom says as Stromfly attacks me with licks. I knee her in the chest lightly before she runs up stairs and comes back literally a second later with her leash in her jaws. I look at my watch and see that it's 3:59. I sigh as I throw my bag to the side. I take the leash from her and clip it on her collar before walking out the door. I yawn as we walk down the street. We pass the twins' house to have two white Danes run up to us, barking and stumbling over each other's paws. Stormfly jumps in front of me and breaks into a flurry of barks, causing the white Danes to skid to a halt and press their bellies to the grass of the yard. Stormfly stands taller, her head reaching my collarbone, as she growled.
"Barf! Belch! Get back here!" two voices yell before the twins from school run out of the house. Tuffnut elbows his sister, causing her to tackle him to the ground.
"Like dogie like owner," I say as they wrestle on the lawn. They pause when they here me, scrambling to their feet.
"Hey! Did Hiccup ask you yet?" Ruffnut asks.
I stare at her blankly, "Ask me what?" They exchange a glance with smirks.
"Oh, never mind. He was probably gonna chicken out anyway," Ruff says and I shrug.
"Stormfly. Heel," I order before walking away, Stormfly growling at them before following.
Time skip
We reach the end of our block and I let Stormfly off her leash, letting her run to the front door. I jog after her, my legs sore from the run to and around the park. I open the door and she moves to the fireplace, which was ablaze, and lays down next to her brother on the carpet in front of it. Now all we need is snow. I think as I look out the window at the leafless trees that make the forest. I go to my room and flop down on my bed just as my phone vibrates in my back pocket.
"Oop. M'ah butt's vibratin'," I mutter as I reach and take it out. I look at the caller ID. HICCUP?! How did he get my number?! When did he get my number?! How did I get his number?! When did I get his number?! I scream in my head before gulping. I answer it and put it to my ear. "How and when did you get my freaking number, creep?!" I ask without greeting him.
"Whoa! Calm down, little lady!" he laughs and I cringe at what he just called me.
"I will not calm down! Not until you tell me how and when you got my number!" I say.
"You fell asleep in Home EC. Why you had your phone on you, I have no idea," he says, laughter still in his voice.
"It was in my back pocket, creep," I say.
"Please stop calling me that," he says, slight hurt in his voice, "It was sticking out of your pocket so I grabbed it so the teacher wouldn't see. You are a very convincing sleep studier." I rub my temples in exasperation.
"What does that mean?" I ask.
"You were still answering questions, while snoring quietly. It's like you've fallen asleep in class before and know how to make everyone think you're still awake," he says in amazement. I roll my eyes.
"Lets just say I don't exactly jump at the thought of my dad giving me a lecture," I say and he laughs again.
"Anyway, you didn't call me," he says when he finally calms down.
"I didn't think I could. Why did you want me to? And pick me up for what?" I ask. He hums in thought.
"You don't know?" he asks.
"Know what?" I question, laying on my back.
"My cousin, Snotlout, is throwing a party. I was thinking you could come with me," he says.
"You two are cousins? I don't see the resemblance," I tell him and he laughs.
"Yeah. He's a nut job but he's family. So. Friday night. 7:00. Wear something nice," he says and hangs up before I can get my first word of protest out of my throat. I put my phone down and scream into my pillow. Then an idea comes to mind. Mom would never let me go to a party with a bunch of strangers. I run down stairs and find my mom in the kitchen.
"I still can't believe we're unpacked after less than a week!" she exclaims as she takes a bowel out of the cabinet.
"Mommy, may I go to a party with Hiccup and a bunch of strangers from school?" I ask sweetly and she pauses, dropping the bowel and causing it to shatter. She stares at me.
"The mayors son?" she asks in shock. He's the mayors son?! Unsure what to do, I shrug. "OF COURSE YOU CAN!" She yells as she wraps me in a hug. "You're finally coming out of your shell! Oh my gosh! Will you let me do your make-up?! What about your hair?! Oh, we need to go shopping for a party outfit! Oh, your first party! I need to scrapbook the receipt!" she starts freaking out as I stare at her, my mouth gaping open in utter shock.
"MOM!" I scream and she stops her rambling to look at me. "I'm not going to a party," I say and she laughs a little before stopping abruptly.
"Of course you are," she says and grabs my arms, "I have been waiting for you to go out with friends ever since-" I cut her off.
"MOM!" I say loudly and she rolls her eyes.
"You need to forget what happened. This is a very nice neighborhood and you aren't gonna go through that again. Besides, you can't disappoint the mayors son!" she says and I let out an exasperated sigh before running up stairs. I flop down on my bed until Stormfly joins me and licks my arm. I pet her head before standing up and walking to my desk and sitting down. I open my laptop and write an email. I had found a person to look at my story and see if it's publish worthy. I just had to email him. After I'm finished typing, I read it about ten times before slowly clicking send. I push away from the desk and spin on my chair a few times. What have I done?!
