Chapter 9

I yawned once again before taking a big gulp of that cup of coffee that I had made at 2 in the morning. It is already my 3rd cup of coffee and I am still so tired. I was about to lay my head down on my work desk when I heard a clap and I snapped out of it.

JiNa sat down next to me with a packet of potato chips. "What's with you?? Tired again??"

I nodded with my eyes closed and I reached for the snacks, hoping that it will make me feel less tired. "It is only a few hours until the exams and you can sleep for the whole day after that. Just bear with it for a while."

"Tell me, is this really how your dear cousin studies for his tests and exams every single time??"

JiNa told me a few days ago that Min Yoongi excels in his exams by staying up late and burning the midnight oil. She nodded. "From what I know, yes but everyone has a different way of studying. Everyone learns in a different way. Studying all night before exams may not do good for you."

I pouted. "I know... Of course, I know but I really have to pass this time. I have to get a B at least this time. I can't fail not even one subject or I will drop to the last class."

She ruffled my hair. "Then study as hard as you can. See you in the morning." She said laying down on her bed.

I envy JiNa sometimes. She doesn't need to study much and still pass her exams. She stays up watching dramas as usual and then falling asleep while I am still trying to fight off the tiredness out of me. This is the difference between a dumb person and smart person.

"Aishh..." I scratched my head in frustration and looked at all the roommates that are already asleep. Bless them...

I sighed and went back to studying when I realized that I have written down the wrong formulas for the wrong subject. I let out a loud groan. Why did I write down the wrong formulas??

I looked at the time on the clock. It is already 3.15 am and I am still here. Exams start at 8 am, I would still have like 5 hours left. If I'm fast, maybe I can finish this in one hour and revise for the next 4 hours. I looked at the blank piece of paper in front of me. I can definitely do it and at least get a B!!

Next Morning

I felt a tug on my sleeves and I turned to the other side, opening my eyes slowly. I got up from the table and stared at the paper in front of me gasping loudly. It is still a blank piece of paper and nothing has been written on it, what have I done for the past 5 hours??

Hazel walked past me with a hot cup of latte. "Good Morning-- Why are you crying??"

I looked down and there were my tears dripping down onto the paper. I sniffled and turned my head towards her. "I fell asleep..."

"That's good. You feel refreshed right??"

I shook my head. "It would be better if I had written down my notes before sleeping but I have done nothing at all for the past few hours." I banged my head on the table.

YoonJi appeared next to her, taking a sip of her coffee. "There's no need to cry, dear. I had figured that you wouldn't really do what you say so I had already photocopied a set of notes for you." She placed the notes on my table.

"You did??"

"I certainly did. Who told me to have a roommate like that??"

"Thanks, Yoonji-ah...."

"Yah!! We only have 20 minutes before 7 and you guys are still here sipping coffee and chatting leisurely??" JiNa came out of the shower and just blew dry her hair with the hairdryer.

"Yes, Madam Joo!!" We all said in unison.

We got out of the dorm in the designated time and rushed to campus where there were tons of students studying at everywhere that they can study. Some were studying in the toilets, I'm not kidding. I wonder how did they manage to bear the smell.

We got into class and I began studying like mad as I haven't started studying and exams are starting soon. I only stopped studying until they said '5 minutes before exams. Please stop studying and get to your seats with your pencil case and water bottle.'

I grabbed my pencil case and water bottle from my school bag and said good luck to my roommates before sitting down in my designated seat. It is according to my register number. Min Yoongi passed by my seat and whispered. "Good luck, You are still going to be with me even if you pass or fail, Babo."

I raised my hand to hit him but I quickly put it down.

What if the teacher thinks that I am cheating by communicating with the smartest kid in the class?? It won't be a C or a D this time, instead, I will get penalized.

I scoffed and stayed in my seat, waiting for the exam and sitting for it. I hope that what YoonJi gave me earlier will at least help me, even a bit would be good. I really need to pass this time. I looked at the stack of paper that is placed in front of me. I really need to pass so that I wouldn't get nagged by my parents for being stupid.

A few days later...

I looked at the notice board which has the school's exam results posted on it. I hid behind JiNa and the others not wanting to search for my name in the 200th range and being disappointed once again.

"Am I in the '200th's??" I asked not opening my eyes. What if I am at the last place?? The 300th place is not a place that my parents will be happy about.

"Nope."

"Then '250th's??"

"Nope."

Hazel gasped loudly. "What?? Why?? Did I drop to the last place??"

"YoonJi, am I seeing things?? Is HeeRa's name at the 179th place??"

179th place?? I did that?? For real??

I came to the front and gasped. I looked at the board that has all the cohort's names on it. I scanned around the '170th's place and gasped.

I am really at the 179th place for the first time. I finally escaped the 200th mark.

I looked at Min Yoongi who is staring at the board, his name is at the 2nd place.
