Chapter 7

*Reader's POV*

I walked towards the woods, my body stiff with anger and tension. When I approached my training areas what I saw stopped me cold. My squad stood side by side giving me a silent salute. I was deeply touched at this ultimate sign of respect and gave them the salute back. Then Armin asked "How come your Shadis's Second in Command. Why don't you join the Scouts?" I met their gazes and saw that they expected a direct answer. I sighed and said "With my incapability, outside the wall would be impossible for me to maneuver." "Incapability?" Eren asked. I nodded and said "My loss of hearing is considered incapability." "Your loss of hearing?" Armin asked.

I laughed and said "If you haven't noticed I'm deaf." "Deaf?! So you've never been outside the walls?" Jean demanded. "That's correct Kirstein" I said. "Then how do you know that these methods actually work?" he demanded. "She used her own methods to fight that other Cadet. Did you not see what she did? Our target training gave her the opening she needed. Our balance training allowed her to complete a difficult move. And our endurance training gave her the speed she needed to catch her attacker off guard" Reiner said.

I held up my hand as they started to get closer. They parted and I said "Just because I haven't left the walls doesn't mean that I've never used these skills to kill a Titan. In fact I've killed many, and saved many more lives especially during the collapse of Wall Maria." "You were there?!" Eren asked facing me. Slowly I nodded. "So your teaching us how to kill without hearing, yet you don't imply the same methods" Jean demanded. "Jean" Armin began. "No I want to know why we have to learn something that she's so afraid to use" Jean demanded.

"Kirstein not once have I mentioned that I'm afraid to use my skills outside the wall. I stated an obvious observation, however if you really want to understand how it would be hard for me to maneuver outside the walls allow me to make it easier for you to process. The Survey Corps uses horses do they not? That in itself isn't a bad thing but this would affect my ability to sense the vibrations of the Titan's walking, by the vibrations of the horses hooves. If I somehow became separated from my group it would be hard for me to determine the way back to the others, or to find my way back to safety. I'm teaching you my methods because not every branch uses horses" I said my eyes narrowed and my voice semi cold.

"Then why not just join another branch?" he demanded. I met his gaze and said "Because nobody can use the services of a deaf woman, no matter how smart or how strong she is. I'm better off here where I can be of better use than a doormat. Now if I was able to join the Scouts or any other branch I would do so without any hesitation, but there are certain circumstances that make it impossible for me to do so that doesn't involve my loss of hearing." "That didn't answer my question, what are you afraid of" Jean demanded. My eyes never left his as I remained silent. "She doesn't want to leave her father" Armin said quietly. Everyone turned to look at him then back at me. I raised my chin and said "Keith Shadis took me in, taught me the ropes, and taught me everything I know about this place. But he is not my father, I may wish he was but that's not what fated decided. Now please continue your training."

They all saluted and went to put on their weights but it was Armin who stayed behind. It was Armin who took off his uniform jacket and handed it towards me. That was then that I remembered my gaping blood splattered shirt. I carefully slipped the shirt over my head and reached out an arm to take it and froze when I noticed everyone's eyes on the etchings on my left arm. Carefully taking Armin's jacket I slipped it on. I was grateful for the covering even if it was small and showed my bra. They all gave me silent nods and continued Armin running with Mikasa's group first. When training was over my squad walked me towards my room, and in return I gave each a small smile and a nod as they walked away.
