Chapter 20

*Reader's POV*

My whole body ached as I walked towards the girl's showers. As I stood under the semi warm spray of water the vibrations of the bathroom door hitting the wall made me open my eyes. Just as I reached for my towel Bertolt walked in. I froze when our eyes met and I saw Bertolt's cheeks turn red at the exact moment I realized that he wasn't alone. I grabbed my towel just at Reiner turned to see what Bertolt was looking at. Reiner's mouth dropped open when he saw me. I wrapped the towel around me, glaring at them as I shut the water off. "Care to tell me why you gentlemen are in the girl's showers?" I asked crossing my arms.

Bertolt looked away and Reiner just scratched his head. "If you don't give me an answer I'll increase everyone's training and you can explain to them and Captain Levi while you complete his punishment as well" I said coldly as I tapped my foot. Reiner was the one who answered "We use the showers here, because the boy's showers aren't as clean." I nodded and said "Complete you business gentlemen I was just leaving." Then I grabbed my things and walked out. When I entered my room I came face to face with Levi giving me an indifferent expression.

I glared at him and demanded "Why is it that I'm always finding you in my room? Damn it you better not be going through my clothes again." "Tch why did Reiner and Bertolt go into the girl's bathroom?" he countered. I crossed my arms and said "Both of them were heading towards the boy's showers when I saw a snake. I screamed and they came running." He raised an eyebrow and said "I didn't hear anything Brat." "You want to?" I asked with a straight face. His eyes slightly widened before he regained his composer and asked "Why are they still in there?" "It was a big snake" I stated.

"So your telling me is that you were taking a shower, saw a big snake, screamed and left the boys to their own devices?" he asked. I nodded and said "Exactly, their big boys they can handle it themselves." He continued to eye me before he said "That is the most ridiculous lie I've ever heard someone say. Now tell me what's really going on Brat." "I was showering when they just walked in. Turns out they use the girl's showers because they're cleaner. Guess you've got slackers in the cleaning area, better work on that. Now tell me why you're here in my room, cause if you don't I'm booting you out" I stated calmly.

"How exactly did you know that Erwin was your father?" he quickly demanded. "My first Master told me that I was bought from a nurse at the hospital I was born. Apparently she had a debt to settle so she sold me to him as collateral. He constantly told me that my own father a Commander didn't want me because I was too weak and defenseless to even consider keeping me. He was the one who marked me. He laughed at me everyday, beating me up until the day he sold me" I said after a long silence. He eyed me before stating coldly "You do know that he had no idea what would happen to you, so you hating him isn't going to help either of you."

I glared at him and said "I was constantly bought and sold by greedy vengeful men. Each having a grudge against my father, each hating him and knowing that all they could do was hurt me. They knew who I was by the emerald bolo tie that was around my neck. I was never allowed to take it off. It was the only sign that gave away my father's identity. If I tried to remove it I was beaten. You don't know the terrible things they made me do. No one will ever know how many times I was beaten until I couldn't walk, or how many times I was forced to wear that emerald and nothing else while men stared, wanting something they couldn't have. So how about you step into my shoes and see if you could look at the Commander in any other way."

"Wasn't there anybody who would help you?" he demanded. I gave a harsh laugh and said "Everyday I hoped someone would find me and take me away from the hell that was my life. I kept hoping until the day I was sold to my 5th Master and ran away the first chance I got. I was found by the MP's and thought they would help but they recognized me then left me in an ally to die." Fiery tears rolled down my cheeks as I fell to my knees as I continued "It was when I laid amongst the trash fighting for my life that I learned that hero's don't exist for people like us. That it was only by our own hand that we are able to free ourselves. And when Shadis took me in and I got better I vowed that I would become a hero for the people who didn't have one."

I pressed my hands against my face as I cried, as I cried for the child I had been and for the woman I had become. Strong arms wrapped around my body as I was lifted into Levi's lap. Nothing was said as I was held securely against the his chest. The soft beating of his heart matched the beating of mine forging a connection between us, and overpowered the darkness of the memories that seemed to overwhelm me. I fell asleep in his arms, feeling safe and protected for the first time in my life.

~*Time skip 2 weeks later*~

*3rd Person POV*

Everyone noticed that the tension between Erwin and L/N had lessened, as well as the fact that Levi and L/N seemed even closer than before. A figure stood in the shadows watching them as they trained together. Both instantly knowing when the other was going to move, both so in tune that the practice seemed to flow like a dance. The figure burned with jealousy before turning away to form a plan.
