My heart started thumping when I heard the honk of cars signalling the arrival of the groom and his entourage. I was dressed in a long royal blue gown with an off white turban over a mild shimmering royal blue  hijab  its remnants tucked into the neck of my gown,  in my hand was an off white mild shimmering clutch  with blue and pink brighter shimmering crystal petal design at the center of each side.

“Come over Sis your groom awaits” Mufeedah beckoned.

Yesterday had passed in a blur and it was Thursday already,  I was  a bit relieved when mom told me the dinner was actually today and not yesterday as she'd said in the morning, but even the tomorrow night she'd told me came too fast,  I wished it had been something along the lines of not ever.

"Sis... " the impatient Mufy blurted in frustration

I raised the dress a little revealing the shimmering off-white Jimmy Choo my feet were clad in.

With quivering hands and uneven strides I made my way to the car lot my heartbeat plummeting with each step I took.

I gave a small smile to the best man who was holding the car door open, I saw Mufeedah and Fareeda hop in the the car in front of  the one I was climbing in my peripheral vision then swallowed hardly declaring the shahada under my breath as I sat close to him.

Wasn’t I suppose to be with the bridesmaids. I inhaled heavily holding my breath so the heavenly scent of his perfume was the only thing I could smell, the sound of the car engine the only sound in the car.

I stole a side glance at him, he was busy tapping his phone, ‘how I wish the circumstances that led to this marriage were different’.

He was clothed in a white shada with royal blue embroidery, how I wish I could catch a glimpse of his kohl rimmed eyes.

My throat was dry but I was too scared to move, I had angered the lion enough there was no need to ruffle it’s mane.

I cleared my throat wetting my throat with my saliva, I felt his gaze on me and stopped, with quivering hands I took a flute from the flute holder and pushed the blue button of the dispenser, my hand was numb from the coldness of the glass, and the air condition was only making it worse, I placed my lips on the rim of the glass and I closed my eyes as the water wetted my throat, water has never tasted more heavenly. I uttered Alhamdulillah under my breath and placed the glass back to where I took it.

I hissed when I felt a tight grip around my arm, but didn’t turn to meet his gaze he looked up at the driver’s seat and pressed a button completely closing us from the driver.

He tightened his grip on my arm,   I raised my head to meet his gaze and the look he had in it made me wish I didn’t.

Was the hatred he had for me that much?, then why didn’t he tell mom and dad about it. He released my arm like he was holding coal I heaved a sigh, muttering Alhamdulillah unendingly in my heart.

The car came to a standstill, I held the handle but stilled when I heard his voice, “I can see you are too eager to show the world how much you despise me don’t worry the feeling is mutual but we wouldn’t want to sell off ‘my’ parents to them though” he said coldly stressing on ‘my’. He didn’t miss the chance to remind I was unwanted by my only parent.

My side of the door was opened, he placed his hand midair for me to take,I looked up and he had the most alluring smile plastered on his face.

In place of the angered, wounded lion was a charming chameleon in whose charm I lose my sanity.
