I strode toward Keen's room and realized that Poultice and Mirage were padding there too. "Did you find anything," I asked Poultice since I knew Mirage wasn't comfortable answering.
Poultice nodded vigorously. "Yeah! It was on the floor near the door."
"We er also know that it couldn't have been the Professor because he would have to wheel through the door and he can't with the water right that," added Mirage but he mumbled it into his chest fur.
I dipped my head. "Thanks pups. We found water in our room that Logan certainly didn't give me. It must have been someone in here."
"Yeah," yipped Poultice as he wagged his tail. "There didn't look to be anyone forcing themselves in."
"Let's talk about this later," I suggested as gently as I could. "I think we should check on Keen one last time." I turned my muzzle to look out the window. "It's getting dark and late. We all need our sleep."
They all nodded and I strode into the room. I saw Kitty laying on her bed with a book. When she saw me she threw the book aside and sat up. "I'm surprised you came back!"
"How is he," asked Poultice as he leaned forward, his ears pricked a bit.
"Go see," Kitty cried as she leaned forward and sobbed into her hands. I saw here eyes before she cried and they were all puffy and white.
I sighed and pushed forward. I pushed Poultice aside gently so I could go in first. I didn't want them to walk into a sight that wasn't pretty. I pushed the door open with my broad head and snaked through. I saw Keen pressed against the wall, his breath labored and raspy. His nose and eyes were streaming. His eyes were open but I couldn't tell where he was looking. I saw no sign that he knew I was in there.
"Keen," I asked as I pressed forward, my ears plastered against my head. "Keen can you hear me?"
Keen suddenly turned his head. He gulped a bit and struggled to speak. "Are my friends okay," he mouthed. When he tried to speak he just let out a cough.
"They're fine," I assured as I felt my throat close in grief. I kinked my tail over my back, motioning for the pups to come in.
Poultice was first. He surged in and bolted through my legs before he skidded to a halt in front of Keen. "K-Keen," he stammered as he laid down, his fur slicked against his body. "Keen can you hear me?"
I saw Mirage hanging back and I sighed. "You can come forward," I told him as I hung back and nudged his haunch so that he would go forward. "He was asking about you. He wants to see you."
Mirage gulped but pushed forward, his whole body shaking. "Keen," Mirage asked as he stood behind his brother who was distraught beyond words.
I couldn't bare to see the pups like this. I strode back into the room and saw Logan trying to soothe Kitty. However Logan was the worst at comforting and soothing I had ever seen. A cactus could be more cuddly and soothing than he could ever be.
I leaped on the bed and pushed my head against Kitty's hand, offering her to pet me. She sniffed and wrapped her hands around me, nearly choking me. "Please tell me that Keen will be alright Starlight," she begged as her voice shook with emotion.
"I can't promise you that," I confessed as I took a step back, shaking my head.
Kitty then laid back on her bed, still sobbing. Logan sat up, frowning. I know he didn't approve about how emotional girls could be but he had to let Kitty get through this. I pushed myself back into the bathroom and strode over to Poultice and Mirage. "We have to go," I told them."
Mirage dipped his head and strode back toward the door but Poultice wasn't on board with leaving his friend. "No," gasped Poultice as his eyes rounded in shock.
With a heavy heart I sunk my teeth into his scruff and hauled him to his paws. He spun to face me and snarl. "I can't lost my friend!"
"This illness may become airborne and contagious between wolves," I told him sternly. "Do you think that Keen wants that."
Poultice looked over to Keen who stretched out a shaky paw. He looked so weak. He was already a skinny pup but now after this illness he looked awful. Poultice stretched out his own paw and grazed Keen's paw. Keen mouthed something to Poultice and Poultice turned to look at me.
"What's he saying Starlight?"
I leaned forward, my eyes narrowed. "He says the he wants you to be safe."
Poultice whimpered and I nudged him away from Keen. I didn't know what to say to Keen so I didn't say anything. I pushed back into the bedroom, staggering a bit. My eyes seemed dark and clouded.
"Please don't do this to me," I cried a bit but I didn't want anyone to hear me since I saw Mirage and Poultice trying to comfort each other. "I can't lost another."
