A few days later the school had started to get back to normal. I had my second class. I was excited since this was my first class since I had gotten back from Stryker's base.
I sat at the front of the class. I watched mutant pups who were companions of other students file into the room. They spoke quietly to one another before I let out a bark to hush the class down. There wasn't a lot of them since the whole companion idea was still not full blown yet.
"So how are we all today," I asked as I wagged my tail.
"Good Professor Starlight," echoed the chorus of pups as their eyes brightened in curiosity.
"I'm glad! Now who would like to demonstrate their power first," I asked, decided that I wasn't going to have them write papers. They could just demonstrate. I was more of a visual wolf.
I blinked my eyes as Feldspar raised his paw and I saw the energetic pup's eyes brighten. "Alright Feldspar, come on up."
"Yes!" Feldspar surged forward with his tail wagging in excitement. I took a step back and sat beside Keen who looked up at me and smiled.
Feldspar let out a breath and shook his pelt a bit. He then focused a water dish. He suddenly dispersed it into millions of atoms. He then put it back together, all the atoms in place, right in front of me. He bowed and his tail wagged.
"What's your power," asked a light brown she-wolf in the front of the room.
Feldspar rolled his eyes. "I can disperse atoms and put them together somewhere else. Say a car is in the way I can disperse the atoms and place them somewhere else," he explained as he dipped his head.
I dipped my own head. "Very good Feldspar, thank you."
Feldspar smiled before he bounded to his desk and sat back down before he whispered something into Poultice's ear. Poultice chuckled before he hung back and looked at his paws.
I turned to look at the rest of the pups. "Crimson she-wolf," I barked as I looked at a small russet she-wolf in the back. She had pretty green eyes but she looked shy. I didn't want to press her but I needed to know what her mutant power was.
She strode up to the front of the class and stood, her tail lashing between her legs in fear. She let out a breath of fear before her eyes turned blazing in determination. I wasn't sure what was in store but I knew it would be good.
She shook out her paws before she suddenly began to grow. She let out a snarl and in a heartbeat she turned into a giant tiger. Her eyes glowed and her claws extended. "That's not all," she assured before she lifted her tail and lashed it. It sounded exactly like a whip.
The whole class yowled in excitement and shock. She beamed before she turned back to a wolf and she shook her pelt. "How was that?"
"Very good," I praised with gentle eyes. "What's your name?"
"Sunset," she replied before she hurried back to her seat and sat down with bright eyes.
"Alright black and red wolf," I barked as the larger male black and red wolf strode forward, ready to show off his power.
His red eyes gleamed a bit before he looked at me. He lifted a paw and suddenly smoke engulfed the room. I coughed and sputtered as I tried to breath. "Okay. Okay!"
The smoke suddenly lifted and the wolf dipped his head. "I can also manipulate any vapor but I can create smoke."
"What's your name," I asked the red and black wolf.
The wolf shrugged. "My parents named me Ace but I call myself Smokestream."
I dipped my head. "Alright then." I was about to call on Poultice when I heard the bell. "Okay for tomorrow I want you each to think of a name that you can call yourself."
The pups nodded before some of them bounded out of the room. I smiled before I was about to follow them. Before I could I saw Poultice hang back and weave between my legs.
"Hey Poultice how are you," I asked as I lowered my head and licked him between the ears affectionately.
"Good," he yipped before he jumped onto my back and I rumbled in amusement. "Did you know that the Professor used to know Mystique?"
"No I didn't," I rumbled as I reared on my hind legs and he fell harshly against the ground. He shook his head to clear it before he darted to my side and rubbed again my leg. "Well you two are really getting to be friends, aren't you?"
He nodded vigorously. "Yeah! Anyone who picks thorns and burrs from my fur deserves my friendship," he laughed.
I nodded in agreement before I felt a sudden twinge in my stomach. I groaned a bit and leaned forward. I bit my lip before I turned my head downward and twisted it in pain.
"Starlight what's wrong," asked Poultice in shock. He had probably never seen me in pain.
"Oh I'm sure it's nothing," I assured as I straightened and shook my head. "I probably just ate too fast."
"Oh I'll leave you alone then," Poultice barked before he strode out of the den. He was probably afraid that I was ill.
Once he was gone I felt a small kick in my underbelly. I suddenly felt something I had never felt before, excitement. I smiled and knew what I had to do.
