"Poultice run," I snarled as I surged forward.
Poultice looked over his shoulders with leaves clamped firmly in his jaws. His eyes widened in shock and he looked shocked.
The grizzly rounded on him and raised a paw high in the air. He then plunged it back down and it collided with Poultice's flank. Poultice cried as he was thrown into the dagger bushes. He rolled around and I smelled blood in the air. I knew that thistles must have sliced through Poultice's flank.
The bear snarled and Poultice whimpered in fear. I suddenly flapped my wings and flew through the air. I landed on the side of the bear's face and snapped my teeth on it's muzzle. "Leave him alone wolf-heart," I spat as I felt flesh tear under my large fangs.
The bear turned and snarled in rage. He lifted a paw and threw it against his muzzle. I fell to the ground and the grizzly turned back on Poultice. He whimpered and pressed deeper into the thistles despite the pain.
I hauled myself back on my paws and snarled to show my teeth. I bolted back to the bear and sunk my teeth into it's leg. I pulled it, trying to make him fall. The bear just lowered back down on four legs and it sunk it's large claws into my stomach. I wailed in agony before I churned my hind legs against the bear's paws to tug it from my stomach.
I healed quickly before I charged back toward the bear and leaped on it's underbelly. I threw the bear to the ground but it rolled over and pushed my head against the ground. It kept pushing and I struggled to breath.
Suddenly I heard a growl and looked up to see Poultice leaping through the air. He landed on the bear's throat and his claws sliced through it. He then sunk his teeth into the bear's cheek. The bear snarled and blood began to ooze onto the ground. However I couldn't tell if it was the bear's blood or Poultice's blood.
Once the bear finally stepped off of me I fought to breath. Suddenly the bear turned and threw Poultice back into the dagger bushes. He yelped and I saw the leaves near the bear's paws. I knew I couldn't have him step on them or Keen could die.
I rushed to my paws and surged toward the bear. I leaped onto his back and sunk my teeth into the back of the bear's neck. The bear bellowed and I felt it's muscles tense under his back. He raised a paw over his back and threw me to the ground. The bear plunged it's head toward me and I sunk my claws into the bear's throat.
Blood oozed onto my chest and stomach fur and made it hard for me to move. He kept pressing his nest against my body as he tried to choke me. My eyes widened in rage and I sunk my teeth into the bear's ear, shredding it.
The bear roared in my ear and I felt my head begin to throb. I snarled before I raised my paws and extended my claws to their full length. The bear plunged it's head toward me again and this time I stabbed him right in the throat.
The bear's eyes widened in terror and let out a raspy breath. It's eyes then rolled back in it's head and I threw him backwards. Blood oozed from his throat and now covered my paws. I tucked my claws back into my paws and forced myself to my aching paws.
"Can I ever get a break," I complained as I shook my pelt. Blood flew from my pelt and littered the ground. It wasn't mine but I hated feeling the bear's blood dry on my pelt. I really wanted a shower or at least something to clean me off.
I heard a moan before I dived forward and picked up the leaves in my jaws. I let out a gasp of relief and I felt my shoulders relax.
"Starlight," mumbled a voice and I realized that Poultice was still covered in daggers.
"Poultice," I cried as I surged forward and skidded a bit as I saw Poultice buried in a dagger bush. He had thistles, thorns, brambles, and burrs tangled all though his pelt and they were sticking out everywhere. "Are you alright?"
I saw blood was covering his pelt and one of his eyes was swollen shut. He turned his good eye to me and whimpered. "I don't think so," he whimpered as he tried to haul himself to his paws. He wailed and I knew that thorns were sticking out of his pads. He fell back down and moaned as he laid in a pile of slick and crimson blood.
"It's alright," I breathed as I leaned my head forward. I gingerly grasped his scruff and pulled him up. I sat him down and he groaned a bit.
"Did you get the herbs," he asked hopefully as he pawed the ground as he tried to dislodge a thorn from his pad.
"Yes I did," I assured as I grabbed the herbs tightly between my teeth. "Now I know you probably aren't fit to fly so I'll carry you."
I flapped my wings and sunk my claws into his spine. He cried but there was nothing I could do about it. "Don't worry this won't be long," I told him as I nuzzled his cheek with my nose.
I took to the sky and carried Poultice. I was just glad that Boulder Run wasn't far from Xavier's School For Gifted Youngsters.
