"I...I mean song writing could be an option for me." She sighed, "But do you know how hard it is to make it in this industry as a twenty four year old washed up dancer?
"Can't say that I do." He said.
"I've done my research. I had a lot of spare time after my fall. The way I see it, song writing, is the place where I'd get most success from." She told him, "But I have no stand out qualities for that, never mind anything else."
"You're a good producer."
"That's my problem. I'm good at a lot of things. I love them all. But I'm not great at anything. But you need to have something special to make a run at it you know?"
"Who says you're average at any of it? Yourself? Because Caitlyn, I've always thought you were one of the most talented people I know." He argued and she found herself having to look away from the intense way he looked at her. As if wanting her to disagree with how he saw her.
"I don't know." She admitted with a sigh.
"What about a break, I mean you've worked with Connect Three on a few demos before, we could always use a good producer full time...?"
"I don't want a hand out."
"But you'd be a great producer to have on board." He argued
"I want to earn it. I want to do it myself. I want my talent to actually matter. That was why I put off telling everybody, I don't want pity offers. I want my music to matter."
"That's why I think you'll do great. You care about the music."
"Yeah but I don't have Peggy's following, or Mitchie's range or Tess' industry knowledge."
"Yeah but those things can be worked on. I can help you with the song writing thing, see how that goes, I think you'd be great at it."
She nearly laughed to herself, she was going to get a big ego if she stayed around Nate this much. Maybe that's why she was feeling better already. Ben had just dragged her down constantly, she could see that now, in hindsight. And in the one day of being back with Nate, he did nothing but build her up. It felt like a breath of fresh air.
"Well, I...where would I even start?"
"With a guitar." He smiled, leaning down and pulling a guitar out from under his bed.
But it wasn't just any guitar case.
"Is that...?" She almost couldn't believe it.
It was a banged up black case, with patches worn down in places and a few locks on it. But if it was what she thought it was it would have carvings on the bottom.
"Have a look." He urged her, handing the case over. "I thought about it yesterday and I thought it would help us both, I know it's cheesy and..." He shrugged hopelessly, frowning as if unsure of his actions and how she going to take it. "You can keep it if you want, it was yours in the first place really..."
She shushed him and turned the case over, where there, carved out from the black were two messy signatures.
Caitlyn Gellar.
Nate Gray.
It brought a surprise tear to her eye. Her eight year old self had such a strong belief in herself. They had signed it soon after they had first met. It was the case that had caused Caitlyn the trouble, the one that wouldn't open the day they had first met. They had said they would become famous musicians and they could sell the guitar case off in a few years for millions because it would have their signatures on it.
