Caitlyn was pretty sure that she squealed the entire time from when they finished the song and Nate thanked the crowd to when he finally managed to pull her from the stage and across the room toward the bar.
She was clasping her hand to her chest. "Oh wow, wow, wow, I just did that...!"
"You did!" His smile reflected her own.
"We did." She corrected, grabbing his hands and practically jumping up and down. She hadn't felt such a high since the Battle of the Camps. "Nate, thank you much." She nearly jumped into him as she reached for a hug.
"You're welcome, it was awesome Caitlyn." He said into her ear as he clasped his arms around her. She hadn't felt as happy and content in a long, long time.
The same guy as before got back up on stage to sing another Wet Crows cover as Nate pulled up two stools for them at the bar while Caitlyn still felt the adrenaline pumping through her blood.
"I can't believe I just did that." She laughed to herself, resting her head on her right hand, leaning into Nate so they could hear each other.
"You better believe it. Seriously Caitlyn, no matter what happens, you can't stop doing that. Writing and performing, you just can't see how talented you are."
Between the euphoria and Nate's heartfelt words, she felt herself tearing up.
"You two are quite the performers. Have these, on the house." The owner grinned, pushing two drinks over to them and giving Caitlyn a second to blink back her tears and for Nate to lean over and hug her again.
Admittedly, she would realise later, they may have been slightly too excited and drank a little bit more than they should have. But it was so nice to see Nate so relaxed and not looking over his shoulders for cameras. And between the adrenaline and alcohol, Caitlyn couldn't remember ever being so excited and happy in a long time.
The undivided attention of Nate might have had something to do with that, though.
The tiredness hit her later as they were sat together listening to more 'karaoke'. She felt brave enough to lean her head on his shoulder and when he didn't pull away, she took it as a good sign.
"You happy?" He asked.
"Unbelievably happy." She answered with a huge smile on her face.
"Good." She felt him nod to himself. "You should play at one of the Jams at Camp." He suggested.
"One performance at a time Gray." She loved feeling him laugh.
Eventually the crowd at the bar disappeared. She could still feel the buzz in her veins as Nate hummed along to a song she couldn't hear.
She wanted to stay there forever.
"I'm closing up now kids, how about you two get yourselves up to sleep huh?" The owner said as he approached them in the now mostly empty bar.
They held onto each other as they made their way towards the stairs and climbed them as Caitlyn started to harmonize with Nate's humming tune.
It felt freeing, knowing that she could sing in front of other people.
They made it to their room and Caitlyn retreated to the bathroom to get ready for bed. She climbed into her bed, "Thank you for tonight Nate." She said to the boy she maybe loved who was in his bed, across the room.
Even in the darkness of the room, punctured by the faint light of the street lights outside, she could see he was smiling, even if he was now mostly asleep.
