She was still lying awake when he got back to their cabin.
He sneaked in as quietly as he could, thinking she was asleep in the darkened room.
"Hey Nate, you okay?" She asked at the same moment that he turned on his bedside light. His shadow danced across the room and he wouldn't meet her eyes.
"Yeah I'm good. Sweet dreams, Caitlyn." And that was it. That was all the explanation she was getting for his behaviour. He grabbed his things and disappeared into the bathroom.
She couldn't take it anymore. She threw off her covers and sat up, resting her head in her hands. There was no point in beating around the bush, if she had ruined everything she would rather know it. She wasn't about to dance around it and pretend they were fine when they obviously were not.
He reappeared a few minutes later, making a beeline for his bed before she worked up her courage and spoke up.
"What's up Nate? What's with you avoiding me all day?"
He froze, staring at her and looking like a deer caught in headlights.
He opened his mouth to speak just as Caitlyn's ringtone shrilled from beside her
She reached for it immediately, blood pounding in her ears and her heart racing, because nobody called at night unless there was something really wrong.
At the same time, keeping her eyes on her best friend, breathing a sigh of relief and sitting down with an unreadable expression on his face.
Mitchie's number popped up on the screen which was so bright in the darkness that it glared at her.
"Hey Mitch-" But Caitlyn's greeting was cut off by Mitchie squealing ecstatically down the phone line.
"Caitlyn! Oh my gosh, oh my gosh," Mitchie was barely getting words out between the squeals of excitement.
Caitlyn had to hold her phone away from her ear because of the noise but felt her heart rate slowing.
Nothing was wrong. But by the sounds of it, something was really right.
Mitchie's laughter and squeals were infectious and Caitlyn found herself smiling, "What is it Mitchie?"
"I'm engaged!"
"What?" Caitlyn's screams matched Mitchie and all she could do was see relief appear on Nate's face.
"You're engaged?" She questioned in between both her and Mitchie's yells of delight
"Yes!" Mitchie took a breath. "Shane just asked me a few minutes ago. I wasn't expecting this! Oh my gosh, Caitlyn, I'm getting married!"
"Mitchie that is so fantastic, I'm so, so happy for you." And she was. It was the truth. She had seen Shane and Mitchie go through so much together and the fact that they were able to stay together was heart-warming.
And what could be better than having two of your best friends marry each other?
"It was so romantic Caitlyn, he had the ring and everything and oh I'm starting to cry again..." Caitlyn herself was nearly crying with her.
"It's so brilliant Mitchie."
"How could I nearly forget? I rang you to ask...would you be my maid of honour? You're my best friend Caitlyn, you're practically me sister and I would really love to have you with me at the wedding."
That was it.
The tears broke out and Caitlyn ended up happily cried along with Mitchie. "Mitchie! Of course I will! You're getting married! Of course I'm there."
