"You know." He said, his gaze on the horizon. "This is not how I expected my life to go. After sending Shane back here, I didn't think I'd have to come crawling back myself..."
"Don't do that." She told him.
"Do what?"
"Think about the bad side of it all. Believe me, I've done that for a good two weeks, hiding under the covers, watching too much TV, moping about my life. Actually, I was doing just that this morning." She admitted, "But I figure, we have time now, might as well think of what good can come from it. Getting my life back on track for one."
"You make it sound like we can have a good summer." He said, smiling despite himself.
"Hey, at least we're not alone now," She shrugged. "And since when has Camp Rock not delivered on a great summer?"
"Someone's looking on the bright side." He commented.
"Well it's that or we can both mope around and get a pay check at the end of it all."
"Misery loves company." He said, and turned to look her in the eye. "But you're right. Camp Rock's always been good to us right. And hey, this summer is looking a lot better now that you're here."
She had gotten over him. She had.
It was just hard to remember it when he said things like that and sat so close that she could see her reflection in his eyes and catch the scent of his cologne.
It was unnerving, being able to open up so easily with him. He was now the only one who knew the extent of her problems. Her parents thought that she was on holiday with Mitchie, and Mitchie thought she was on holiday with her parents. The people in her dance circle didn't know the extent of her injuries, and the people that weren't from her dancing world didn't know about the reasons for the breakup of her relationship with Ben. She even censored herself on the group messages that her and the other 'camp rockers' had, so no one would know how much she was falling apart.
She still collaborated with Peggy on her YouTube videos, still co-produced demos with the Gray brothers, still talked to Mitchie nearly every day and tried not to let people see that she was drowning while trying to keep it all together.
"Thanks." She smiled.
Time seemed to pass in a blur, they had plenty of stories to share, sticking to the lighter topics. They hadn't met up in a few months, since Ella's birthday, when the entire group had reunited. It was notoriously hard to get everyone together, it was one of the downfalls of everyone choosing to pursue something creative for their careers.
Nate's phone beeped, and he swiped at the screen before frowning and putting it away. Only to have it beep again two minutes later.
He groaned before looking at it the second time but then his frown disappeared. "Oh it's the alarm I set. Orientation in the mess hall is in twenty minutes. I thought it was Dana again..." He said.
"Cool." She said, purposely side stepping any and all conversation that revolved around Dana. She had to mentally prepare herself if they did get around to talking about her. "Well, I'm going to get started on my unpacking, and see if my roommate has arrived before orientation."
"I'll meet you outside the mess hall in twenty minutes so?"
"Sure thing." She told him before rambling on back over toward her cabin. The door was unlocked this time, and sighing with slight relief, she let herself in. Bags now occupied the other bed and the door to the en-suite bathroom opened just as Caitlyn had made her way across to her own bed.
"Hey, I'm Caitlyn, you must be my roommate..." She called out to the woman before turning to get a look at her new roommate and then trailed off when she caught sight of who it was.
"No." She stated out loud. "You have got to be kidding me." She spit out the other woman.
Because that's what her new roommate was, the other woman. Or one in a string of them, apparently. But the one standing across from Caitlyn with an equally shocked expression as Caitlyn had, stood the woman whom she had caught in bed with her ex-boyfriend.
She was too shocked to say much more, or to form her thoughts into coherent words. She didn't know if she was in shock, if she was hurt, or angry. She just knew she needed to get out of the room. "Brown...fix this..." She barely mumbled, more to herself than to her roommate, as she shot her way out the door.
Her breath was coming in short bursts, and her mind was racing as she ended up running straight into the opening where most of the campers were gathering.
"Oh my gosh, you're Caitlyn Gellar." A girl, no older than sixteen said, as Caitlyn walked by her. She didn't know where she was going, she just knew she had to find Brown so he could move her accommodation.
"Can I get an autograph?"
"You're friends with Mitchie Torres right?"
"I love you in Margaret DuBrey's videos!"
She was surrounded and being talked at by a group of campers before she even knew what was happening. All that kept replaying in her head was the moment she had walked into her own apartment and found Ben, good, strong, reliable Ben, with the other woman. She had turned on her heel and left, and he followed her, begging for another chance, that that woman would be the last one. But she hadn't been the first. It had all come out in the screaming match that had followed. Two of his dance partners, and then two of his dance students. Caitlyn had kicked him out of their apartment that night, and moved out herself the day after. Trying to gather up the pieces of her heart that he had shattered while she packed up her things.
The news had spread like wildfire through her dance circles. Almost as fast as the questions were firing at her now. Until someone grabbed her hand. She knew on instinct it was Nate's and he somehow led her from the crowd, at a jog, and around the back of a few cabins before emerging onto the lake.
"Are you okay?" he asked, placing his hands on her shoulders.
But she didn't want or need his pity, and she broke angrily from his hold, she didn't know what she wanted. She paced in front of him, growling at her own stupidity and rubbing at her eyes.
"I'm such an idiot."
"No you're not." He said it with such conviction that she almost believed him.
"Yes. I am." And she was suddenly mortified that her voice broke and she very nearly started to cry as she stopped to look at him. "I need to find Brown."
"Okay, but maybe not right now, we've caused a bit of a frenzy with the campers, he's doing damage control right now." He said, looking in the direction they had just came from. "Caitlyn. What's wrong?" His voice was soft, like honey, when he said her name.
"I've been roomed up with one of the long line of women that my ex-boyfriend cheated on me with, and I really, really don't want to stay there."
"Ugh." She moaned, dragging her hands through her hair, "And she's probably going through my stuff right now, laughing at me...probably showing her friends how pathetic I am..." Her voice cracked on the verge of tears again and it scared her just how vulnerable she was about the entire thing. She was too proud, she didn't think it had hit her self-esteem quite so hard. She thought she was over it.
"Hey," Nate said, pulling her close, and she finally gave in and laid her head against his chest. "I'll go and get your bags, and even if Brown can't sort anything out today, there's any empty bed in my cabin. You can stay with me tonight."
Thanks so much for reading! I hope you like it so far, I'd love to know what you think. :)
