So all Caitlyn could do as watch as Nate paced back and forth outside one of the windows, with his phone at his ear. Feeling helpless all over again, she went and rummaged in one of her bags, finally finding the notebook that stayed hidden most of the time.
The one she kept for lyrics and melodies, all her own.
And she figured that there was no better time to use it than now.
It was more than an hour later, Caitlyn had gotten a chorus and some of a verse down along with the makings of a melody when Nate finally made it back inside.
He looked torn up inside and she hated it. It felt like someone was burning a hole in her heart as she watched him, rub his eyes, run his hands through his hair and nearly fling his phone onto his bed.
He sat down next to it, and growled as he put his head on his hands.
She knew Nate. She knew that pestering him with questions wouldn't work. So she focused on putting away the, her, guitar and notebook and pulled out box of cookies that she kept hidden.
It was one of their many inside jokes. Caitlyn and Nate had become obsessed with Connie's secret recipe chocolate chip cookies during their last year at camp together. They used to sweet-talk Connie into giving them extras so they could stash away. Then they would go and hide out in their hiding spot, munch on the cookies, and talk for most of the night.
And if anything was going to fix this, Caitlyn thought as she looked over at a tired Nate who was staring into space, it was Connie's cookies.
Connie had left the recipe for the camp's new kitchen staff and Caitlyn had managed to get her hands on a few, just for emergencies, and this seemed like as good a time as any to use them.
"So...?" She started. "I hear talking helps..."
"Really?" He lifted his head at her voice, quirked an eyebrow and smiled at her.
She nodded, handing him the small box, and he took a cookie.
"Yeah some guy told me, total weirdo but I put up with him." She shrugged with a laugh. It was his turn to throw a pillow at her.
"Dana is the problem?" She asked.
"Dana." He confirmed. "And I'm tired after touring. It's nice to forget the outside world for a while. Camp always did that for me. I don't have to be 'on' all the time y'know? I'm not constantly questioned how the song writing for the next album is coming every other hour by management or the media, or Dana's dad...I'm not being hounded by paparazzi's and having my life be front page fodder..." he trailed off.
"Sounds hectic." She said.
He sighed and rubbed the back of his neck, "Can I tell you a secret?"
"Of course you can." She responded without hesitation.
"You know Jason's working on his own record label?"
She nodded, most people had been surprised. Most people got the wrong impression of Jason, that he was an air head or that he didn't care about anything. But Caitlyn had grown up with him, he was one of the smartest people she knew and the man had a heart of gold. When she had heard the news, she was beyond proud of him.
"Well the first artist that he got signed up failed spectacularly. Shane had him picked out, I was working on getting some tracks together for him, Jason was working on the legal stuff but the artist was swiped by a bigger label. Anyway, he's planning on getting an artist or two on board and build them from the ground up, make a success of them, give them a big break. And...then make enough capital so we can sign the band over. Our current contract is out soon enough, and we could benefit from getting out from under our management's thumb. We could be our own bosses, have more creative freedom..."
