"Nate? Wake up." She called to him as soon as she made it back over the threshold and turned on the lights.
Caitlyn had to bite back a smile when she watched Nate sit up in lightning speed, blinking wearily and run his hand through his already mussed up hair.
"Wha-?" He asked her and she suspected that he was still half asleep.
"Brown needs our help. Up and at 'em Gray." She told him as she grabbed their flashlights and tossed one to him before beginning to root around for a sweatshirt or cardigan.
He mumbled something incoherent before tossing off his covers and throwing on a bigger t-shirt over the one he slept in and then threw Caitlyn his hoodie that had been sitting on one of the chairs.
"Thanks." She said over her shoulder as she led them out of the cabin and into the dark. "Brown said there are campers down on the pier..."
They turned on their flashlights while navigating their way there and all Caitlyn could think about was the fact that Nate's hoodie was the most comfortable thing she had ever put on.
It may have had something to do with the fact that Nate's scent that clung to his hoodie, but she couldn't even admit that to herself. A mix of his cologne, shampoo and, somehow, the lake water infected her senses, as if she wasn't distracted enough by the fact that he was practically glued to her side as they walked. It was hard to shake the thoughts from her head when they were practically taking a moonlit walk together.
"Be careful." He placed a hand on her arm to make sure she didn't trip over the roots and stones on the worn pathway. "You don't want to hurt your ankle anymore."
She wanted to think that he was being a good friend, a great friend. But her heart melted a little with the attention he gave her.
The moonlight was filtering in and out through the trees and the rest of the camp was quiet, peaceful, until they could hear the commotion on the pier. They could hear the trouble before they say it.
They made it to the pier where Brown and a few other counsellors were already in the process of rounding up the rebellious campers. Caitlyn and Nate fell into their roles of helping out, nearly shooing the students off the wooden pier and back in the direction of their own cabins.
They shone their torches and spoke harsh low tones to march the campers back off to the cabin staff that had appeared from the direction of the campers cabins.
Brown was in deep conversation with a few of the campers so Nate and Caitlyn started to help with clearing up. It wasn't all that bad, somebody had abandoned a guitar, a dozen soda cans and a few sweet wrappers along the stretch of wood that reached out into the lake.
A lake that was serene tonight, a few waves lapping along the shore left the rest of the body of water like a mirror to the vast dark blue sky above.
Caitlyn was picking up some wrappers and empty soda cans when Nate had called her name softly. She turned too quickly on the damp wood. She blamed the way all of a sudden he was able to make her heart race like a seventeen year old again.
Her trainers gave way on the slippery surface as she turned and she felt the cold water before she even knew she was falling.
She felt the cold instantly. She went under, and panicked for a split second. It was dark and the clothes she was wearing stuck to her, but she managed to break the surface and get some much needed air into her lungs. The water wasn't too high, but the darkness made her lose her calm for a split second.
Nate was there. In an instant. Even if it was dark, she would know the feel of his arms anywhere. He leaned over and pulled her up, helping her to climb her way back onto the pier. She was out of the water but the cool night breeze now felt sharp on her cold skin.
