Sugawara walked into the classroom and settled down at a random seat. He was determined to learn everything he needed to here by the end of the year. The teacher stepped into class not long after and greeted everyone with a simple wave. No words.
"I'm sure all of you know that is the most basic sign language that anyone would know. But by the end of this semester, you will all learn more advanced words to communicate with the deaf or the mute. No words, just hands."
-
Sugawara went into class three days a week obediently. You wouldn't expect that you could learn so much in that few hours of class, and if you listened attentively and took notes, you would know almost the entire dictionary in sign language. There is a lot of commitment for such an amazing skill.
Just as he planned, by the end of the year, he graduated. He was more than happy, and definitely relieved to get his afternoons back. One of his classmates who used to sit beside him approached him.
"I've always wondered, why did you even come to learn sign language? You studied so hard. There must be something that fuelled such passion."
Sugawara let his lips curve into a soft smile and answered, "There is this girl, she is a patient at the hospital with leukaemia. I met her while volunteering to befriend the patients. When I found out she was deaf, I decided to learn sign language to converse with her, as not many people can speak with the deaf."
Indeed, this silver-haired had a kind soul with a pure heart.
-
The following day, Sugawara quietly sauntered over to the space beside the hospital bed.
He softly tapped on the girl's shoulder as he whispered, "Kimberly?"
The girl slowly opened her eyes to peek at who woke her up.
Using his sign language skills, he spoke to her.
"I'm sorry, did I wake you up?"
"You know sign language now?"
"Yes... I just learnt it. What do you want? Are you feeling thristy?"
"I would like some water."
Water, got it. Sugawara walked over to the counter at the corner of the room to pour some water into a glass for Kimberly. Just as he stepped away from the bed the monitors around Kimberly started to beep intensely.
Red lights were blinking and the line on the heart monitor went from jaggered to straight with a long beep sound. A doctor and nurse rushed into the room and told Sugawara to move aside.
They brought out the defibrillator and placed the paddles on her chest.
"Clear!"
A charge of 100 volts was sent to her body.
"Clear!"
A charge of 150 volts this time.
After trying a few times without avail, the doctor looked at the clock. "Time of death, 7.07 pm."
"No... this can't be." Sugawara didn't believe it, he couldn't. Kimberly was gone, he was too late. Just when he finally was able to communicate with her, she left the world. He should have been there earlier. He should have.
