Giving In

Avi Gupta

I pushed the café entrance door and my senses were blasted with rich coffee aroma. I smiled tiredly inhaling and my eyes searched around for Ronit. He was sitting at the wood bar table on one of the seats. He appeared to be in deep thoughts staring through the glass wall in front of him.

"Hey," I greeted him and he broke out of his stupor.

"Morning Avi," he uttered softly getting up and pulling a chair beside him for me to sit.

"Sorry I couldn't get us a table, they were all occupied when I came," he said smiling sheepishly.

My eyes wandered around noticing how the café was full at seven in the morning and still maintained a peaceful atmosphere. "No bother at all, I just hope they serve breakfast this early. I am really hungry," I said setting my bag aside.

"Oh thank god! I was hoping I don't have to eat alone while you just order coffee to drink," he spoke in a glad tone. "Mostly working men and women come to this café so they do serve breakfast early. What do you want to eat? I am going to have waffles topped up with icecream and chocolate spreading," he said licking his lips earnestly.

A giggle left my mouth, "So you have a sweet tooth like Kushal. He finished two big brownies yesterday simply like that," I said and he shook his head amused.

I gazed back at the menu board and decide to have a full English breakfast with Vanilla coffee, no milk. He went to order at the counter while I sat waiting. I rubbed my forehead trying to get rid of my exhaustion.

Last night I had severe chest pains, I couldn't sleep at all. I took pills but even then I could feel my heart getting heavy. I shuddered remembering the feeling. The pain settled around four in the morning. I fell in deep slumber not waking up even with Snoopy barking. Jay came into my room and woke me up at last. He looked worried after I told him about the chest pains.

He wanted me to take the day off but I felt little better after taking a shower. Since I agreed to meet with Ronit, I told Jay I will return home if I started getting aches again. He looked displeased and checking my phone to make sure he was in speed dial, he left grumbling to Avikam's mansion.

Ronit joined me back looking hesitant to bring up Julie. He let out a frustrated sigh brushing his fingers through his hair. I felt bad for him, "Ronit just say and ask whatever you want to," I spoke calmly.

Exhaling he settled to a resolve, "Avi, you know I like her right? I mean you didn't even blink when I asked to talk with you about her," he asked tilting his head.

I nodded smiling, "I am not ignorant to what happens around me besides Julie talked to me about you."

He sat up straight, "She did? I never saw her hanging out with any one at the company and then you came she became very close to you. You both got along quiet fast for which I am glad. She could definitely use a good friend. Can I know what she told you about me? You don't have to if you feel like you are breaking her trust," he asked in a hopeful tone.

Considering about it for few seconds, I decided to tell him. "She told me you became friends and then you expressed your feelings. She didn't feel that way so she started avoiding you to make things less awkward," I said and he looked dejected. I can't tell him about her true feelings, that's for her to confess.

"That's the thing Avi she told me she doesn't have that kind of feelings three years back but I didn't believe her. I think she felt the same away and still does. So I didn't give up, I keep sending her letters and chocolates. But lately I am thinking maybe I deluded myself in believing that she feels the same way. If not why wouldn't she respond to any of my gestures?
