Chapter 8: Get The Job Done Right
“How was detention?” My Dad asked as soon as I walked through the door. He had his arms crossed and if it wasn’t for the dirty old worn-out jeans and oil stained t-shirt he was wearing, he would look like an army officer about to make me scrub the halls with a toothbrush.
“Dad, don’t start. Besides, what else would I do on a Saturday? I would hang out with those guys anyway, we just happened to be in detention,” I replied with an exasperated tone.
He sighed. “Fine Ryder, but I’m warning you, there must be no ‘next time’ okay? Or you’ll be moving in with your Aunt in Alaska.”
My eyes widened. “I’m already a freak! I don’t need to be a freak in some god-forsaken town in the middle of nowhere!”
“Exactly! So no ‘next time’ Ryder! And your grades better improve than what they used to be,” He warned with that annoying finger gesture parents use.
“They already are, Ivy helps since she somehow happens to be a straight-A student.”
“Isn’t Ivy that lovely girl who fixed you up and dropped off your gear the other day? And isn’t she the leader of that drug addict gang you hang out with?”
I shrugged, there wasn’t really much to say. He already knew the answer anyway. “Oh, and I think they want me to help to stop their addictions, so anything you can get off of my counsellor will be greatly appreciated.”
“You’re going to help them with their addictions?” He asked incredulously.
I shrugged again, what was I to say?
“That’s great Ryder! You can even invite them over here anytime if you need help!”
“But aren’t I supposed to pretend that I’m grounded?”
“Well, yeah. But I don’t think being grounded excludes people coming over here, does it?”
“I thought it did.”
“Oh,” He looked down in thought for a second, “Well you know how I am with this kind of thing, it was always your Mom doing the punishing.”
I rolled my eyes. “The only time I was ever actually punished by either of you, was when I tipped the bucket of water onto our neighbour’s head, because I didn’t like him. And I was seven!”
“Oh. Oops, well they can still come over if they promise to behave.” He shrugged.
I shook my head at him. “We’re teenagers Dad; there is no real definition for ‘behave’ to us. Oh and I need you to help me drop my car off at the mechanics tomorrow, because the window needs fixing.” I walked up the stairs to stop any further conversation.
“I- What? Okay,” I heard him say as I shut my bedroom door. My poor Dad, he’s got it rough since I have no job and he has to look after both of us now, and he’s used to just looking after himself and getting yelled at.
I threw my shirt onto the ground and kicked my shoes off next to it as I collapsed onto the bed. I rolled over so i could see the TV better as I turned it on along with the Xbox. Tomorrow was bound to be dull compared to today.
“Ryder! I thought you said you wanted to go to the mechanics today!” My Dad yelled as he banged on my door.
I slowly awoke to find myself tangled in the sheets and still in yesterday’s jeans.
