To be honest, I forgot that yesterday was Friday. But here's an update anyway! I would've posted it sooner, but I got writing parts of the ending as you do as a writer so you don't forget stuff. Anyway, enjoy!!!

Chapter 18: Second Chances

Ryder’s POV

My lunch break sucked to be honest.

My classes were okay, boring without the others, but they were okay. Then it came to lunchtime. I definitely couldn’t hang out with the others as usual because I had been kicked out of their group, and I had no idea where they were. I also wasn’t going to risk going to the alley either, in case Dylan and Roman decided to start a brawl where no one could find my body.

I also couldn’t hang out with Stephanie and her group like I used to either, because she still wasn’t talking to me, which meant the others wouldn’t be talking to me either. Everyone in the school also avoided me like the plague, even the outcasts looked away as I shoved passed.

In the end, I settled for hanging out by myself in the library. I’ve never really been to a library before, so it was an interesting experience. There was only one other person in there, and that was the librarian who glared at me behind a stack of books. She gave me a warning look that said if I messed stuff up, I would be paying for it, big time.

I found a spot at the very back of the library, away from the glaring librarian and ate my lunch that my Dad had made me take. Mark had put me on a new diet as well as new medication, and my Dad was taking it seriously. My lunch was practically tasteless besides the juicy apple I swiped from the kitchen table when he wasn’t looking, but I’m sure he wouldn’t mind, apples are good for your health after all.

After a while I grew bored of staring at ‘The Hitch Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’ which I had no interest in reading, so I wandered around for a bit, killing time. Until I found a section of the library I actually liked.

There was an entire section dedicated to math books, and I grinned when I saw them. They were dusty and faded, but they were math books. I pulled out the least faded one and flicked through it, becoming mesmerised by all of the numbers.

I know, I sound like a nerd, but I love numbers, especially when it was a book relating numbers to life. It was very interesting, it showed how often numbers are actually used in everyday life. I even learnt a thing or too.

“Ahem,” A stern voice sounded right by my ear.

I jumped, knocking the book off the table with a bang. I turned to see the librarian, hands on her hips. I gave her an ‘oops’ gesture, but she still didn’t look very impressed.

“Class is about to start, I suggest that if you want to continue reading that book, you check it out. Very few people do these days, and you can check out any other book here if you like, just as long as you don’t destroy them, but by the look on your face, you wouldn’t dare do such a thing,” She said. She actually sounded rather sympathetic towards the books, and her face even softened towards me a little bit. I was surprised; I didn’t think she would like me.

“But don’t I have to get a library card sorted out,” I said as I picked up the book and smoothed out the crinkles.

“Just give me your name and I’ll get you one by tomorrow, you can take it out in the meantime though, I know where it is,” She smiled at me, showing off her laugh lines.
