Chapter 26: Pain Killers Are The Best Drugs

Ryder’s POV

“How much longer do you think we’ll have to wait?” Ivy mumbled, sick of staring at white walls, white ceilings and white furniture.

I was just sick of smelling antiseptic, and my eyes stung from the brightness of the lights. Crystal was snuggled up in a comfy armchair sobbing quietly, earning herself odd looks from strangers also in the hospital waiting room. Roman was sitting next to me reading a magazine, snorting in laughter every now and then. I noticed it was a ‘Woman’s Day’ one. I was sitting with my legs like a plank across the walkway, feet sitting on the coffee table in front of us, where Roman got his magazine from. All the while Ivy had lain across several seats and rested her head in my lap.

We were ‘patiently’ awaiting news of Dylan. He had been admitted to hospital over an hour and 51 minutes ago now, and we still haven’t heard anything.

“You know, they’ll only let family in to see him for the first little while,” I sighed. I was familiar with this procedure, way too familiar.

“Then we say we’re family,” Crystal sniffed, finally stopping her water works for a while.

“Okay, then who are we?” Ivy asked as Roman put his magazine down to pay attention.

“We say that we’re his cousins. That’s believable, right?” Crystal suggested.

We all nodded, liking where this was going.

“Ivy and I will be sisters on Dylan’s mother’s side. And you two will be twins on Dylan’s father’s side. How’s that?”

“Is it really believable that Roman and I are twins?” I asked, a little unsure of this idea.

“We never said identical,” Ivy said, obviously taking this one as the best option.

I sighed, well, it was better than nothing.

A nurse showed up then, looking cheery with her fake smile and tired eyes. “Are you here for Dylan Burne?”

Crystal immediately bounced up. “Yep, we’re here to see him. He’s alright isn’t he?”

The nurse nodded. “He’s going to recover nicely, as long as he doesn’t remove his stiches. Although, only family can visit him, sorry,” She replied, not in the least bit sounding sorry.

“Oh, we are family. We’re his cousins.”

She gave us a once over with squinted eyes and tight lips. “Oh, alright, follow me.” She led us down multiple hallways and corridors, until finally she pointed us to a private room where Dylan supposedly was.

“Hold on a second,” She said before we even managed to take a step towards the door.

We looked at her expectantly, we were good at acting.

“Where are your parents?” She asked, suspicion getting the best of her.

I panicked for a split second before I replied, “Dead.” So did everyone else as we spoke it in unison. It was a little freaky, considering it wasn’t planned, but at least we were on the same page.
