We sat on the mountain for a couple of hours until the sun started to set. Nate had fallen asleep and I stared up at the sky. In this world the sky and I were the only two things that were different from everybody else. Not even the sky was the same. Every day and every night it was changing. I carefully got up and expanded my wings. They were 23 feet in wingspan.
The feathers were a soft grey like my hair. I softly ran my hands against them and shuddered. They were sensitive, fragile, they were vulnerable. I moved them slowly and I could feel myself lifting off the ground. They were powerful and easy to control. I laughed to myself as I quickly shot into the air.
It felt so natural to soar through the night sky. I had no idea it would have felt this amazing. I circled around and looked back toward the clearing where Nate was lying, but he was gone. I looked around and saw a small figure trying to catch up with me. I could hear his soft panting.
"Midnight! Midnight wait up!"
I laughed as I stopped and hovered in the air. Nate was struggling to move his wings fast enough to catch up with me. His face was red and I could hear his heart beating rapidly. His hair was plastered to his forehead and neck. Finally he was beside me struggling to catch his breath. I grabbed his hand and carefully lead him toward the ground.
He fell down in a heaping pile of feathers and laughed to himself.
"Man, you are one fast flyer."
I laughed and laid beside him, steadying my breathing. We watched the sky until Nate broke our tranquil silence.
"How are you feeling?"
"I'm kinda shocked, but I'm sure I'll get used to it. How about you?"
"I'm happy. Finally there's another angel like me."
"But I'm not an angel like you..."
"You're still an angel, doesn't matter if you're part alpha or whatever. You're still one of us."
He pointed up to the sky and smiled. I smiled too as I looked up toward the stars. More silence followed until Nate sat up.
"We should go back. I just realized there was no sun hahaha."
He stood up and helped me off the ground. I was about to take off into the sky, but Nate placed his hand against my arm to stop me.
"How about we just walk?"
He looked at me lovingly and guided me to a trail leading down the mountain. We walked and talked about anything that came to our minds. It was nice talking to someone, but it made me miss Novae. Everything Nate said or did brought back a memory of my beloved Novae, but after every memory was the replay of Miracle and him kissing in my old bedroom. It hurt to think about, so when we finally reached the castle I asked to be left alone. The sun was up by the time I made it to my bed.
Nate and I had stayed out all night without even realizing it. I slipped under my cover and cried until sleep had taken over and engulfed me in darkness. It felt like hours had passed when I opened my eyes. the only problem was I wasn't in my room back at Grave Angels, I was in my old room back in Physical Realm. It was exactly how I had left it all those years ago. I looked around and tried to get up, but my body wouldn't respond.
My cheeks felt wet and all of the sudden I was overwhelmed with sadness. Finally my body moved, but when I passed in front of my full length mirror I saw it wasn't me but Novae. He looked away from the mirror and I saw me walk through the door. She looked exactly like me minus having no wings. Novae grew scared and started screaming.
"No! No please don't make me do this again!"
Suddenly he was pressed against me and my eyes looked scared. I looked down and looked back up and Novae/me. I was crying and slowly my bright eyes grew dim and I slumped to the floor. Novae followed in pursuit holding me in his arms. He was crying, cursing himself for hurting me. He looked down and that's when I saw the girl he was holding wasn't me.
It was a girl I knew back in grade school. I personally wanted to cry, but instead Novae dropped her dead body and kicked it to a pile of other girls. they were all girls I knew laid piled up with blood oozing from deep wounds. Suddenly Novae stood in front of the mirror and began talking, but it was directed toward me.
"My love, I just wanted to warn you. I'm so sorry I made you watch something so horrible, but you needed to know. I don't want to hurt you. Please when the time comes, stay away from me during the fight."
He started crying and I shot up in bed screaming. the haunting image of his tears burned itself into my mind. I cried and cried, wishing there was something I could do to save him. A knock came at my door and soft whispers.
~"Are you sure?"~
~"Nate, I swear I heard her scream."~
~"She's asleep though."~
~"I heard her scream."~
I got out of my bed and crossed the room to the door. I slowly opened it to see Nate and Masami standing side by side.
"Yes?"
"I'm sorry to have bothered you my queen, but I thought I heard you scream. Is everything okay?"
"Yes everything is fine, just a nightmare."
She nodded softly and bowed before leaving Nate and me alone.
"Midnight, are you sure you're okay?"
"It was just a nightmare Nate. Nothing more."
He looked at me sadly and kissed my head.
"If you say so. Now come on, the kitchen had prepared an amazing lunch for you."
He wrapped his arm around my waist and lead me to the dining room. The moment I walked in everyone stopped to stare at my wings. I stood at the head of the table and everyone bowed before sitting down. Everybody talked excitedly about my new abilities and wings. I watched happily as the people around me talked and ate merrily. No matter how different I was the people here accepted me just fine. I ate in silence until Masami tapped me on the shoulder.
"Hey, you okay? You've been awfully quiet this entire time."
"Yeah, just enjoying this time with everyone."
She smiled and continued to eat and talk to a servant sitting beside her. Nate was eating quietly as he read a piece of paper. I tried to look over, but he quickly put it away.
"What are you doing?"
"I was just trying to see what you were reading."
His face grew red and I could hear his heart speed up.
"Oh well uhm don't worry, you'll be able to read it soon."
He turned away and finished eating his place. I sat watching him eat nervously when Logan walked up behind me.
"My queen, would you like to go out and take a walk with me?"
Suddenly Nate slammed his fist against the table and stormed out of the dining room. Logan looked at me shocked and quickly left the room as well. I looked down at the table sadly as I realized everyone was staring. Finally I got up and headed back to my chambers after clearing my area. I passed by rooms and other gathering spaces as I noticed all of the couples that were around me. Masami was with a boy with dog features named John, Stephanie was with Daniel, a cat experiment and tons of other couples surrounded me.
I couldn't take it anymore, I needed to see my love again. As I entered my bedroom Nate and Logan stood up and stared at me. I was about to ask why they were here, but before my mouth opened they both shouted in unison.
"Midnight Hyperion, I love you!"
