Trigger Warning: Suicide, Depression, and Mentions of Death
Most people agree that dying while being asleep is the best way to die. Peaceful, no signs of torture or pain. Peggy remembers when her mother was alive, how she used to say angels carry them, the ones dying while asleep, to heaven. But sometimes angels are clumsy and drop them by accident and that's why you jerk awake and felt like you were falling.
For months now Peggy has been hollow, she felt like she should've been lifted off to heaven like her mother before her. She missed her mom, she missed her terribly. She got really good at putting on a mask, her mask of safety. She was really good at pretending to be okay when all she wanted to do was die.
She would go on dates with Laf and hid her feelings easily, her mask slipped on quicker than she could realize it was happening. Peggy sighed and stared at her ceiling, she'd been in bed for hours now. Finally, she rolled out and brushed a tear away, she hadn't realized she had been crying but at the same time, she didn't care. She got up and looked in the mirror, "Stupid." She mumbled and glared at herself before forcing her gaze away so she wouldn't dissolve into another episode of listing the things she hated about herself.
She fished out a sweater and smiled softly, her Pansexual flag sweater, it's what she wore her when she came out. Laf was the one who gave her the final push of confidence, he supported her when she told him and that's what made it so she could do it. With Laf she was able to do these things she couldn't normally do. She couldn't tell him though, she really couldn't, if he knew she was broken he might hate her, break up with her.
Peggy shook her head to clear it and pulled the sweater on before finding black jeans and pulling those on as well. She tied her hair up and left the room, trying not to think about the lack of humming her mother would give off as she made breakfast. Peggy left the house and pulled her hoodie on tighter, texting Laf about their camping trip. She went to the garage and found her suitcase she'd packed earlier.
PegLeg: I'm ready whenever xx
Laffy: on my way :)
She smiled at the text, it made her happy. No matter what happened, Laf could always make her happy. She waited for Laf's pickup truck to pull up and smiled at him when it did, he gave her his signature grin and she threw her suitcase into the bed of the truck before climbing into the passenger seat.
"'ello my beautiful girlfriend, 'ow are you?" Laf asked as soon as she entered. Peggy blushed slightly and buckled her seat belt quickly.
"I'm hanging in there, you?" She looked at him as he began the drive to their campsite. They'd been planning this trip for weeks but unbeknownst to him, she had a...rather dark plan based on where they were staying.
"I 'ave been good," He told her and spared a glance at her with his grin growing, "Better with you 'ere though." He pulled into the parking spot for the camping trail and got out. He jogged around the front of the car and helped Peggy out even though she didn't need it.
"Thanks," She kissed him gently for a moment, letting Laf rest his hands on her hips gently before the two broke off and gathered their supplies. Peggy grabbed her suitcase that she had packed while Laf pulled his backpack on which was filled before grabbing the packaging of the tent.
He locked the truck and then led the way to where they would be staying, smiling at her every time she complained and giving her quick reassurance. Laf never told Peggy she was annoying, he refused to, he refused to hurt her in any way and he knew calling her annoying might be something that would hurt her. Calling her anything might hurt her which is why Laf never did, he just reassured her and told her how amazing she was for continuing to trek forwards.
When they reached their campsite Peggy dropped her suitcase and collapsed over it like a bag of potatoes, "Finally!" She whined and Laf chuckled.
"I'll set the tent up," He told her and she looked up and watched as Laf took the tent out and he did indeed set it up perfectly.
"Wow," Peggy got up and went over, investigating the four-person tent, "You did awesome. I thought I'd have to help but nope. Sorry though...for not helping. I shouldn't make you do everything." She smiled at him and he carried her suitcase over while shaking his head.
"That is nonsense," He told her, kissing her cheek as he brought her suitcase and his backpack inside the tent, "By my 'onor as Lafayette...I will put tents up and carry my girlfriend's suitcase and do everything I can to make my girlfriend's life easier." He then picked Peggy up and spun in a circle with her as she laughed and shook her head.
"You're crazy," She then faked a yawn and looked at the sun, "Let's go to bed? Hiking starts tomorrow at 9 am sharp young man." She grinned at him.
"Fiiiiiiiiine," Laf pretended to whine and they crawled into the tent together, sorting out their sleeping bags.
Laf tried to cuddle up to Peggy but she shook her head and pushed him slightly, "It's so hot...sorry."
"It's alright." He kissed her and she let him before he rolled to the other side of the tent. Peggy pretended to fall asleep and waited for Laf to actually.
When she was sure Laf was fast asleep Peggy slipped from the tent and pulled her tennis shoes on, hurrying down a worn trail. She knew where she was going, she knew exactly where she was going, she'd been there before. It had been planned for months, the place her mother last took her on their last hiking trip would mark Peggy's death.
She found the cliff face and stood at the top, feeling the cold air rustle her curly hair. She felt tears leave her eyes before she closed them and she held her arms out. She let herself fall over the edge of the cliff with a scream but...that wasn't her scream?
She felt something catch her wrist and she stared up into the eyes of Laf which made her struggle, "Let go Laf let go! You won't want me now anymore just-just-"
"-Non!" Laf choked as he struggled to hold her tightly. He had to pull her up, that much he knew, "I love you! I still love you no matter what's going on. Peggy...Peggy please grab my 'and so I can pull you up!" His tears fell down his face quickly as panic consumed him, the thought of watching Peggy fall to her death consumed him.
Peggy sniffed and put her free hand over her eyes, "I was born to die." She told him shakily, her struggling stopping as she went limp.
"Non..." Laf held his other hand out for her to grab, "You were born to love and marry me! Give me your 'and dammit so I can ask you to marry me!" Peggy stared up at him in shock before slowly giving him her last hand and letting him pull her up and to his chest.
She could hear him whispering words of thanks to multiple Gods at once while she just sat there, "Did you mean it?" She asked quietly, picking at her sweater.
"Mean what?" Laf asked, trying to calm down from his crying as he rocked them. He waited a moment before remembering, "Marrying you? God yes...I-I have a ring back at the camp I was going to ask you tomorrow on the 'ike but-but I-I wouldn't 'ave been able...Peggy, I love you so goddamn much. I promise I will never judge you, I'll be 'ere, just come to me. Okay?"
Slowly Peggy nodded, hugging him back, "O-Okay...I love you too."
