Trigger Warning: Death
Alexander trudged through the forest, pulling his fur coat on tighter as his breath turned to white mist. The snow had begun to leak into his boots and it made him miserable. He needed to get back to Valley Forge as soon as he could, his spying had gone better than planned and he had a lot to share with his company.
He heard what sounded like barking and furrowed his eyebrows, it wasn't a dog, he'd been with many dogs in the past so he knew this animal wasn't a dog. He followed in curiosity and found an animal he immediately identified him as a fox. Upon further investigation, he realized she was pregnant and trapped in a trap. Despite knowing he should let hunters have their livelihood...he couldn't leave this fox alone so he pried the fox open and wrapped her up in his coat.
The fox barked at him and he mumbled a small, "Be quiet." To her. He tried to trudge back to his current military encampment but the snow picked up and he knew he was trapped in the forest for the night, General Washington, Lafayette, and Hercules would be so worried.
Alex looked around and found a tree with taller bushes around it. He nodded once and hurried over, digging out a spot of snow all the way to the dirt for the fox which he set down. Immediately after he manipulated the branches and bushes to create a sort of ceiling which would keep the snow and wind out. Alex kept moving the plants until he had made a makeshift den which he then crawled into and lied down inside, smiling slightly as the fox snuggled into him. He looked at her stomach and thought about baby foxes which made him even happier.
Alex fell asleep soon after and slept comfortably, he had made quite a good shelter for the night and he wasn't freezing. It made him proud and he had only good dreams despite his fear of being trapped in the forest if the snow got thicker, he only had enough food rations for maybe a week if he ate as little as possible.
Alex woke up to a howling and got up onto his hands and knees instantly, looking around for danger but he found none. He shook the feeling of battle out and saw it was the fox crying for help. He narrowed his eyes in confusion, "H-Hey what's wrong?" He turned her over and she howled again at him, "Sorry! I-oh." It suddenly hit him, "Oh God!" As soon as he realized what was happening there was already a fox pup inside the shelter.
Alex looked at the entrance to the shelter and then at this fox, "Come on-Come on girl." He moved the pup to her stomach and watched the mother lick his fur the wrong way, "We'll name this one Canon." He decided.
The fox barked and he smiled until she began to howl again. He pet her side gently to encourage her, "It's okay. It's just babies. It happens every day." He didn't know if she could understand her but her voice seemed to be soothing him.
With another howl, a pup joined her brother. Alex moved her over to her brother and her mother licked her fur the wrong way again, "We'll name her Elizabeth, after my wife. She was also the second born." He told the fox who chirped back quietly.
Alex felt stress building up between them. In the next few hours as the sunlight began to appear four more pups had come and their mother was losing her strength. He had named them Angelica, Margarita, Hercules, and Lafayette who joined Elizabeth and Cannon. He was scared for this fox but he knew there wasn't many more left, maybe this was even the last one!
He didn't know how right he was because soon there was another fox and the contractions stopped. Alex realized instantly that the pup was still, scarily still, so he took him in his hands and massaged his stomach to try and get him to breath, "Come on. You can do it, little man, come on." He kept whispering words of encouragement until he felt a tap on his shoulder so he turned around and stared in shock at a white figure with freckles and a fox tail paired with ears.
He pointed at the pup, "That's me." The man said and Alex stared at this man who he was sure was a madman, "I am a fox spirit now." He explained, "For your service to my mother and my siblings and your kindness and generosity, you have been given a Kitsune Spirit, me." He said and sat down, putting a hand on his mother's head and receiving a lick on the cheek as he smiled.
"I have named myself John." He looked back at Alex, "My bloodline has been able to make Kitsunes for as long as there has been air in this world. We are rare, only the deserving ones are given a Kitsune. I will spy for you, steal for you, possess people to make them go insane or ill for you. This is a great power. Most Kitsune spirits are hard to control, the might possess people or steal of their own accord as they presume this is what their master wishes or feels should happen. If angered, some have been known to turn on their masters." Alex tried to remember all of this but John just laughed making him confused, "I am not as simpleminded as my predecessors. I confess I may be as weak to banishing and scoldings as they were but as long as we communicate and speak to each other as equals then I promise I will have no problems with you and you will have none with me." He stuck his hand out, "What do you say? Is it a deal? To communicate?" Shakily Alex shook John's hand with a nod, "Oh and nobody else can see you so don't just talk to me in a crowded space, I would hate to have to break you out of a mental institute."
Alex laughed and nodded, "I'll remember." He looked at the fox he had saved, he never thought he'd have a Kitsune Spirit or any spirit on that note. Who just thinks they'll receive a spirit for being a decent human being? He never did. But, he knew he'd come to like John.
