Chapter twelve

The breath was stolen from my lungs as Mayona turned her head to look at me. Her head slowly turned and a creepy smile appears on her face. A smile that sent shivers down my spine and freezing my legs. Her breathing almost became ragged and a maniacal laugh escaped her mouth.
"Lucy, listen to me very carefully." Lucas says but I don't hear him. My eyes are trained on Mayona. On the way she slowly lifts her knife up. Everything suddenly seemed to get darker. My ears heard what Lucas was saying but my brain wasn't processing it. I found myself holding tighter onto Natsu, silently pleading him to wake up. For a split second I glanced at Mel and Lucas. Lucas had crouched to the floor, his arm outstretched and was saying things to me. Mel seemed to be moving. Everything seemed to play in slow motion as Mayona began walking towards us. "Run!" Lucas begins running towards us as Mayona raises her knife above my head. Everything in my body frozen, I wince and shut my eyes, awaiting the end.

Only it never comes...

I slowly open my eyes to see red...hair? wrapped around Mayona's arms and pulling her back. She's pulled to the floor and he hair wraps around her body. I look to see the owner of the hair.
"Flare!?" I gasp. Mel sits up in a panic.
"What?! Who!? Where!? Why!?" She says quickly. Lucas walks over to her and says something to her before she nods in understanding.
"H-Hi..." she says shyly. She jumps down from the balcony and faces me.
"But I thought-?" I stammer for words.
"I was dead?" She finishes. "I was about to, but what you did for my wounds saved me. And I want to return the favour." Feeling a little safer, and realising I was leaving a mark on Natsu's hand, I loosen my grip on Natsu. "I think I should explain some things to you."
"That would help." Mel says, resting her head on her knees and smiling in a strange way at Flare.
"You're trying to break through the barrier, right?" Flare asks and I nod. "The barrier's life force isn't linked to Mayona's life force. It's linked to someone else's."
"Who?" Lucas asks.
"Someone you know thought you knew." Flare answers.
"Please, tell us! The anticipation is killing me!" Mel says, sounding annoyed. Something tells me she doesn't like Flare...
"I can't...if I do he'll kill me...." Flare says And Mel sweat drops. "But I can tell you why he's doing this." I nod at her once, motioning her to go on. "See, Lucy, this is mostly to do with you and Mel."
"Wow, I feel special." Mel says before whispering under her breath "don't call me Mel...."
"Mel! Shush!" Lucas shushes her.
"L-I mean, the person who did this had feelings for you Lucy." Flare explains. "And they didn't like how you were so close to Natsu and had feelings for him. He knew that Mayona's family, the seishinbyō (me: translates to psychopath) family, had a grudge against the Dragneel's and decided to use that to his advantage. So he bribed their family to kidnap you. However they went too far and killed your parents. Melody also found out about what they were doing, so they had to kidnap her."
"Wait a minute." I interrupt her. "If Mel knew what they were doing, why didn't she tell us when it happened?"
"My guess is that they drugged her and hit her round the head pretty hard so she'd forget." Flare asks.
"That would explain the purple mark on my head that still hasn't gone...." Mel mutters to herself.
"Anyway, after they'd kidnapped you, Asaka lost control of his wolf instincts, developed an attraction to you both and well...yeah...." Flare continues.
"Lovely..." Mel says in a sarcastic tone.
"Mel shut up." Lucas says. Melody pulls a face at him before listening.
"Mayona here, however, was not informed about things and this is why she believes they were killed in cold blood. It's also why she wasn't around when you were kidnapped." Flare continues "this person met with me in university and found I had feelings for Natsu and was upset about the fact that he has Lucy waiting for him at home. So he said he had a way to make Natsu mine. He gave me a drug, I think, that I put into Natsu's food. This made him 'want' me and things took off from there. However, its effects wore off when Lucy found out. The person thought it would drive Lucy into someone else's arms, preferably his, but it only tore her away from society. In pure anger and rage, he called me and Mayona together and we planned this whole thing."

"So...why was Mel targeted?" Lucas asks.
"Mel...ody was appealing to his wolf instincts...you get this kind of stuff, I don't." Flare says. Lucas jumps on Mel while growling and muttering 'mine', all the while Mel quietly crying out for help.
"So how do we get out of here?" I ask.
"Well we'd have to ki-" Flare starts but a knife is thrown into the back of her head. She falls to the floor, the grip of her hair loosening on Mayona. Mayona stands up, but doesn't attack us thankfully, only to have a knife thrown at her heart.
"Join your pathetic excuse for a family." I hear a voice say above.
"Is that-?" Mel and Lucas say at the same time.

Me: THE END FOR NOW!
Mira: someone's excited.
Me: THER ARE COOKIES THAT NEED TO BE EATEN! GOODBYE! *leaves*
