The snow was falling lazily from a pure white colored sky as Silas opened the school doors. He took a deep breath and breathed out seeing his breath fog as it came out from his mouth. He shivered from the chill that blew through him and rolled down his shirt sleeves before striding into the snow covered parking lot. "Silas! Hey man wait a sec!" A familiar voice called from behind him. Silas grinned knowing exactly who it was and turned giving a small wave.
"Hey what's up Luke?" He asked pleasantly. His friend caught up to him and gave a small shrug. "Eh nothing much. Just escaped from the masses. Where are you off to in such a hurry?" He asked. Silas rubbed the back of his neck running his hand through his dark hair and sighed before speaking. "Just trying to get home before the snow really hits." He said with a small laugh. "Gotta study for that final in a few days. Can't get stuck out here in the cold." Luke chuckled and reached into his pocket for his keys.
"Need a ride? I just got my seat warmers in my car working again." He paused and eyed Silas with a small pause for dramatic effect. His mouth forming into a sly grin. "Dude... warm seats..." He whispered quietly in wonder, widening his eyes like it was the coolest news Silas would hear all day. Silas laughed and shoved him playfully. "Stop being weird bro. And thanks for the offer but you know my folks.. They wouldn't approve."
Luke rolled his eyes. "Yeah yeah. You can't owe people for anything. Even a car ride. No debts to pay off later." He frowned and twirled his keys around, the light jingling seeming to calm him slightly. "But really Si it's no trouble. They don't have to know." Silas smiled sadly and shook his head. "It's okay Luke. I'd hate to be a bother." He turned and walked toward the sidewalk hearing Luke sigh as well and walk to his car.
"Sorry buddy..." Silas murmured turning to watch his friend's car start up, the headlights glowing a dull absent yellow. The car sped away, turning down a street and out of sight. Silas faced forward with a quiet sigh and stepped onto the sidewalk, increasing his pace from before by almost double to beat the storm. Silas might not have been human, but that didn't mean he liked the cold anymore than they would.
His footsteps echoed on the cold concrete sidewalk. The few patches of snow that had already formed below his feet created satisfying crunches, leaving his footprints only to be covered by more snow later on. Silas looked around glancing at the houses and other buildings as he passed by. He frowned a little as a sudden thought crossed his mind. There's not many people around. Silas took another look around studying things more intently. The only other people on the street were an elderly couple talking to each other in hushed tones, and another kid heading home on foot too. Probably because he didn't own a car.Silas adjusted his backpack so it wouldn't dig into his back as badly and continued walking. It's probably just me worrying over nothing. He reasoned with himself. Pushing the thought from his mind. He walked a few more minutes in silence, the only sound his feet crunching the snow below him before stopping in front of a broken down building. The two story building appearing to be in desperate need of repair decades ago. Wood rotten and creaking, its paint chipping away to reveal the bland brown color beneath. The house seemed to groan in greeting as Silas opened the door and stepped inside, whispering an incantation of privacy as he closed the door behind him, bolting it shut.
"Ahh home sweet home." He said with a flat chuckle and tossed his backpack onto an old chair beside the door. Dust scattered in a cloud before settling back down around the bag. Silas went into the kitchen and opened a fridge probably older than the house itself and chose a drink. The bottles in the fridge door clinking together as he pulled the bottle of his choice out. The cap came of with little effort, a his of displeasure coming from it before he took a swig of the soda. He checked the fridge for anything to eat and was not disappointed to find a sandwich he had bought a few days prior.
Silas grabbed the sandwich and headed upstairs to his bedroom. He set the bottle of soda down on a desk and sat in the chair beside it groaning to himself with relief. "Walking sucks so much." He grumbled and opened the bag around his sandwich before taking a bite of it. The turkey was obviously old, tasting borderline spoiled, but he swallowed the bite anyway. It was still food after all. No need to waste it simply due to his own lack of past observation.
Silas took another drink and leaned back in his chair staring at the old creaking ceiling. His mind repeating thoughts he'd had many times before. How did I end up like this... Just a normal teen guy eating a week old sandwich? Drinking something I know it horrible for me yet here I am still drinking it anyway.. He took another bite of the sandwich and sighed before swallowing the bite. Well as normal as I can be.. He got up and flipped on his t.v with the remote before tossing it onto the bed.
"The deaths of the latest car accident on highway-" A news reporter's voice said before Silas took a bite of the sandwich, his chewing drowning out the words of the reporter. "The ambulance estimate twelve dead.." Silas stopped eating and stared at the t.v. The screen pixelating a small amount before refocusing. Twelve? Wait that can't be right. "And six have been found injured." The reporter continued face grim.
"Those who survived all seem to have been knocked out in the accident. No witnesses seem to know what caused the crash. But once we-" The news reporter's face disappeared into black, the screen turning off instantly. Silas dropped the remote, his whole body shook with anger. Twelve dead and the survivors all knocked out? Are humans really this ignorant? Silas clinched his fists and walked out and down the stairs. I have to check this out for myself. He thought and opened the door, stepping back out into the cold.
Silas shut the door hard behind him and renewed the privacy incantation he had set before for good measure before stepping back out onto the snow covered sidewalk. His breath fogged and he shivered a little sticking his hands deep into his jean pockets. "Should've grabbed a coat." He muttered to himself picking up his pace. Regretting his decision to leave his warm house.
The wind howled and snow blew harder around him blocking his vision as he walked down the street. Should've brought a coat. It's so freaking cold. He thought bitterly again as he walked, the cold sending more chills through him. The snow below him had already grown an inch deep. Silas looked around at the gloomy buildings and frowned to himself. Something doesn't feel right.. He thought cocking his head slightly, trying to listen for anything, besides the roaring of the wind.Silas' senses tingled, every single nerve in his body screaming at him to flee from some unknown enemy. But Silas did no such thing. He knew something was approaching him, and that's exactly what he wanted. The only thing missing now was a hint at the location of where this unseen enemy was. Silas was rewarded within a moment, a loud crunch of snow sounding a few feet behind him.. He smiled to himself and pretended to shrug and continued walking. I've got you... whatever you are. He thought with a small smile playing at his lips. The creature moved through the snow giving a low hiss. It moved closer to him then readied itself to strike. Silas knelt down as if to tie his shoe and the creature leapt, ready to sink its teeth into his flesh.
So when it landed in the empty snow on the ground rather than on top of him, it was very confused. A low growl coming from it. "Hey ugly, up here!" Silas called from above. The demon hound hesitantly looked up and growled a lot louder as it spotted him, but it was too late. Silas had leapt up using a small bit of magic, and crashed down onto the dog-like creature breaking its neck instantly. The bone breaking from the impact so loudly it resonated through both of them. The creature's growls halted and soon became a weak cry as it collapsed beneath him. The body twitching and shifting beneath Silas' feet. The creature gave one last croak before its eye's red glow dimmed, an empty gray all that remained. Silas stepped back as hellfire engulfed the creature its body incinerating until nothing remained, not even ashes. The snow remained unaffected, the fire hadn't melted the snow at all. Silas sighed envying the demon's perfect camouflage to cover its existence, even in death. Lucky little biter... He wiped his hand on his jeans and frowned seeing a tear in one of the legs. Probably from one of the demon's horns when he crushed it.
"Dang it..." He mumbled and tugged on the ripped part of his jeans and tore it off completely. I'm running out of jeans real quickly. He thought with a dark laugh. It was a short lived laugh though. Under the torn denim was a bloody gash, the blood running down his leg in a steady stream. Silas picked up some snow and pressed it against the wound flinching at the pain that greeted his action. This could take a few hours to heal...even for me. He sighed and dropped the blood stained snowball, smearing it in the snow around to hide the blood from curious eyes. "Time to head back home." He muttered and limped the way he had came. "I have a sandwich with my name on it."
