Silas' day hadn't been going so well. The higher ups had ordered him to search the human realm for the demon known as In Umbra Orator, The Shadow Speaker. Not a job he personally was fond of doing. Even so, he'd take any kind of action over the boring day he was having. They had sent him to a large human city with buildings reaching for the sky. The sad attempts at reaching the heavens above hardly impressive to Silas. He had seen castles, pyramids, and other far more impressive monuments fall to nothing more than dust. These would be no different.A key reason he did not enjoy his assignment was in a human city like this, he was not allowed to fly. The possibility of a human spotting him was "too great" The Archangels had explained. Human technology was advancing to a point angels had to be more cautious. Humans could have their minds erased easily, but a camera's recording was a very different story. Traffic cams, the average human's cell phone, so many hazards surrounded Silas at every step. Luckily for him, he was much more familiar with human society than his fellow angels.
After the death of his parents, Silas had felt the distance grow between him and most other angels. He knew that many of them felt guilty for what had happened to them. Their deaths had entirely been unnecessary and completely avoidable. Silas knew that, he knew that they all knew that. It was bad enough that they treated him differently since he came into being. He had been born under the star sign of Damnum, Loss. A sign no other angel had been born under in the history of time itself. It certainly didn't get him invited to any parties anyway. "Not that I'd want to go anyway." Silas grumbled to himself.
It was pitch black out, some sort of power outage had affected the city. Making his already miserable night patrol all the more worse. Instead of a quiet night stroll pretending to be a human being, he was trying to not seem like a suspicious person at night walking through dark abandoned alleyways. Those stupid human guards better not interfere again. I nearly lost my cool last time. Silas thought spotting a police car passing by. He had encountered human law enforcement on his last assignment. A memory he'd add to his growing list of memories he wish he could erase.
The past few nights were uneventful and bland, although this severe multi-day blackout had caused many businesses to close for the whole day. Which Silas could tell from his time around humans, was very uncommon. It was interesting to say the least, finally something different than the usual was happening. Sure it might not be the work of the demon Silas was after, but it was finally a chance at some possible action. Silas walked further down the dark empty street. Filled with a renewed feeling in his spirit. That faded quickly though, his more negative nature getting the better of him. Silas soon sighed and sat on a street bench under the lightless store sign of Macbeth's Cafe. The slogan in the window briefly catching Silas' attention. All you can eat as long as you eat it!
"What kind of slogan is that anyway?" Silas muttered aloud to himself. He didn't know why he cared about human junk. Food always makes it personal he reasoned. Dang it now I'm hungry. Silas cursed under his breath and got back to his feet. He was starting to get genuinely frustrated now. This situation sucked! Not only was he hungry, tired, and bored out of his mind. He was STARVING and he was REALLY bored out of his mind. Which for him was like every possible trigger in his body was being triggered simultaneously. He was gonna go crazy if something didn't happen real soon. Waiting was not his strong suit to the least. Finally he gave into his boredom and decided to go in search of some kind of entertainment. His search lasted about five minutes, a loud crash catching his attention. Following the sound he ducked into a dark alleyway and waited in the shadows. Not long after he had hidden in the darkness a girl came running by, she was crying and sobbing, wailing about some unseen terror behind her. Silas didn't get a good look at the girl before she disappeared around the corner. The strange thing was, he didn't see anything following her. Making a quick decision, Silas followed after the girl. Just as he stepped away from the wall, a high pitched scream echoed down the alleyway. Silas darted down the way she had gone and swung around the corner. The sight that greeted him on the other side was horrifying.
