"Silas are you feeling any better?" Lilly asked the next day at school. Silas looked up from his English work and frowned at her. "What do you mean?" He asked despite knowing full well what she meant. Lilly frowned and scooted closer to him making Silas' breath quicken from her proximity."You just left in the middle of our project last night. You didn't even tell us you were leaving. We were so worried.. what happened?" She asked.
Silas sighed and looked away loathing himself as he said it. "I just got sick. It got really really bad so I went home." Lilly shook her head in disbelief. "That doesn't make any sense. No goodbye? No hey guys I don't feel so good? You're hiding something and I don't like it. It's not like you Silas." She said softly touching his arm. Silas looked at her and smiled weakly, wishing he could tell her the truth.
"It's fine Lilly. I'm okay, really. I just didn't feel too good so I went home. Something was bothering me." He managed to say. Lilly dropped her gaze and sighed. "Fine.. keep your secrets. It's not like I care." She said failing to hide her sadness from him. Silas gently put his hand over hers and squeezed it. "I'm okay Lilly. I promise. Some things are just happening that I don't fully understand. But I'll handle it I swear."
Lilly smiled nervously, her eyes filled with worry. She squeezed his hand back and leaned closer to him. "Silas..Whatever's happening I just want you to know I'm-" The school bell rang signaling class was over. Lilly sighed and gathered her stuff as quickly as she could. "Talk later?" She asked her face hidden as she finished zipping up her bag. Silas blinked. "Yeah..uh sure Lilly." He replied softly smiling up at her. Lilly flashed him a quick smile in return and slipped out of the classroom with the rush of other kids.
Silas gathered his stuff, deep in thought. He took his time grabbing his things and shoved them into his backpack, but suddenly he heard an outburst of voices in the hallway. What's happening out there? He thought to himself frowning.Silas slipped his bag on and walked out of the room as fast as he could. When he got into the hall, he spotted a group of students gathered around what appeared to be a fight. Silas pushed through some kids and his eyes widened as he recognized one of the girls as Lilly. She was crying and her jacket was soaked in what looked like coffee.
"Why'd you go and run into me you little freak?" The other girl, Taylor asked, a disgusted sneer written across her face. Silas hated her, she was always messing with someone every day in the hall. It was what she was known for. Intimidating the other girls so they couldn't have who she wanted. Lilly sniffed and didn't answer the girl looking at her ruined jacket in complete despair. Taylor stepped up to her and folded her arms. "If you wanted my coffee so bad you should've done a better job of stealing it honey." She said smugly and reached forward tearing Lilly's jacket sleeve almost completely off of her.Lilly cried out and touched the torn purple fabric, trying desperately to hold it together. "W..why would you do this? I di-" She started but Taylor stopped her. "Why would I? You wasted my coffee. I tore your jacket. Fair trade don't you think so girls?" She asked her friends behind her. The skinny slutty dressed girls laughed mockingly pointing. "Not yet.." Jasmine a fellow cheerleader with dark brown hair chimed in. She came up and tore Lilly's other sleeve completely off of her, Lilly's cries only worsening as she did. Jasmine laughed and tossed the torn fabric onto the floor.
"Hey save some for me." Another girl called and she tore another piece of jacket away. Then another girl joined in. And another. Lilly started sobbing and squirming weakly as she tried to hold her shredded jacket together. "Stop it! Please! I haven't done anything to you! To any of you!" She cried. Taylor smiled coldly at her and shook her head. "No you have actually. You see sweetie, ever since you got here. All the guys only seem to want you. Lilly, Lilly, Lilly. You stole them from me. Their attention.. It belongs to me. I'm the pretty one here not you." She said and raised her hand as if to slap her.
"That's enough." Silas said deadly quiet, his voice carrying farther than is should have been able to. Dozens of shocked faces turned to him. Guys and girls alike stepped out of his way. The look in his eyes breaking down even the strongest or most prideful looking among them. Taylor's friends backed off leaving the Taylor and Lilly alone in front of him. Taylor looked at him with a cocky smile. "Oh hey Silas. Come to join the fun? I think there's still some scraps of cloth left." She said motioning to the pieces of jacket at her feet.
Silas moved through the parted crowd and stood in front of the girl, towering over her. He stared into her eyes, easily reading her emotions and what had led her to do this. All he found was jealousy and pride. You are very lucky I don't kill humans..because if I did you would be my first. He thought feeling his restraint reaching its very limit. Silas continued to stare at her, seeing her smug coolness leaving her eyes. "No one deserves what you're doing to her Taylor." He said, his words laced with unbridled anger towards her."You might think you're special, but you're not. You're just a copy of any teenage girl who's scared of being unnoticed or unseen. You want my attention Taylor? You've got it." Silas continued. Taylor blinked and opened her mouth to speak, then closed it speechless. "You are nobody to me. Or to anyone here. In a few years you'll be completely forgotten by everyone. Enjoy your attention while you have it Taylor. It won't last." He said. Taylor's lip quivered and she stayed completely silent, her body trembling.
Silas strode past her and gently led the sobbing Lilly through the crowd of kids, covering her with his arms as much as he could. He gave them one last glare once he got through them, seeing no one able to meet his eyes, except for Taylor who's face was pale as a ghost. "As for the rest of you, if ANY of you touch her again. You will regret it. I will make sure of it. You won't see the light of day again." He said, his voice dangerously serious. No one in the hall said a word, only a few heads nodded to show their understanding.Silas led Lilly slowly down the hallway and had her sit on a wooden bench, gently easing her onto it. She scooted back and pulled her knees up to her chest, hugging them tightly like a lifeline. "Are you alright?" Silas asked her softly. Lilly shook her head without a word and shivered, hugging her legs tighter into her chest. The last remaining shred of her jacket fell to the floor at his feet.
Silas took off his jacket and put it around her shoulders. Lilly pulled it around her more and sniffed. "T..thank you." She said quietly, still looking at the floor. Silas sat down next to her and sighed quietly. "Don't let them get to you Lilly. They don't know anything. They're just stupid kids." He said. Lilly sniffed again and looked at him. Her chocolate brown eyes glistening with tears that dripped down her face freely."Why do they hate me Silas? I..I try to be nice to everyone. I..i never really even talk to anyone. But they just seem to hate me more for it." She cried. Silas looked into her sweet innocent eyes and felt something inside of him break a little. "They're just jealous of you Lilly. You're sweet, pretty, and you attract a lot of attention. That's just what they live for and you're taking that away from them by being so amazing."Lilly cried more and looked away. "I'm not trying to steal any attention." She said, then she turned looking at him curiously. "You think I'm pretty?" She asked with a hint of surprise slipping through her tone. Silas blinked and mentally kicked himself for letting that slip. "Well I mean compared to the other girls yeah.. Cause they think sluty and pretty are the same. But they're not. They're complete opposites.""So you're saying I'm pretty because I'm not a slut?" She asked eyebrows raised fully. "Yes. I mean no! I mean..." Silas stopped when Lilly started laughing, his face burning from embarrassment. "I know what you mean." She said smiling at him. "Thank you." Silas tilted his head at her. "For what?" He asked. Lilly gently bumped him with her hip and stared at the floor. "For saving me from them and cheering me up. You didn't have to do that." Silas smiled to himself. "Well maybe I just wanted to then for..reasons." He replied softly. Lilly turned to him and gazed at him starting to blush bright pink. I wonder what she's thinking about. Silas wondered. He looked back at her starting to feel the pull he always seemed to feel when he was around her. Silas was about to ask her, but it was then that Lilly leaned up and pressed her lips to his. Silas tensed up for a second, in complete utter shock, but gave in soon after closing his eyes.I.. she...He thought. Lilly pulled away and covered her face with his jacket. "I..I'm sorry. I didn't... I couldn't help it." She exclaimed standing up. Silas opened his eyes and looked up at her. "It's okay. Really Lilly." Lilly uncovered her face and dropped her hands to her sides. She nodded nervously. "I..I wouldn't blame you if you didn-" Silas took her hand and shook his head. "Lilly it's okay really. I don't mind." Lilly looked at him and her eyes beginning to water again."Does that mean you.." She started. Silas stood up and hugged her close to him. Lilly buried her face in his shoulder, sobbing quietly. "I love you Lilly. You don't know how long I have, it's actually been for a while.. But I'd do anything to make you happy. If you'll let me." Silas whispered. "I love you too Silas. I..I'd like that." She whispered quietly into his shoulder. He hugged her tighter against him and whispered into her ear. "I won't let anyone ever hurt you again. I promise." Silas paused and lowered his voice even further. His body trembled as he felt a tear roll down his cheek. For the first time since he had been banished, he was crying.
