So, I was in band class today, and we were warming up. I played the beginning of G from Movement 1 of Bridged.
I played it quickly as well as quite badly, and then said rather loudly, "That was awful." Ms. Chang responded, "That was awful. So don't play it that way."
Of course, me being me, my eyes teared up slightly because my pride is humungus and can't handle much correction without extreme embarrassment. So I sat. And twelve hours later, I'm still thinking about it.
I don't know why it didn't occur to me. 'Don't play it that way if it sounds awful.' I've been playing flute for three and a half years, and never once did I realize that I should play good sound, correct notes, rhythm, and precision rather than speed.
This is the best and deepest piece of unintentional advice I've ever gotten.
