Chapter 20

It was getting dark, so Alex called her mom to come pick us up. When her mom pulled up we hopped into her car.

"Are you sure you don't want me to drive you home, Katie?" Alex's mom said as she drove into her driveway, "it's getting dark."

"No thanks, I'll be fine. It's only a couple of blocks."

"Ok, goodbye then," She said.

I smiled, "bye."

I walked quickly home in the dark. It was cold, so I wanted to get home fast. I don't know why I refused a ride home.

I heard footsteps, they're not mine. I don't dare to turn around. Instead I start walking faster, almost a jog. The footsteps behind me get faster, too.

"Where ya goin'?" A drowsy voice behind me says.

I stopped dead in my tracks. I almost didn't recognize who the voice belonged to-Luke. My heart sped up, and slowly I turned around. He stepped closer, so close it could smell his breath. He's drunk.

"I have to get home." I said, my voice unsteady.

His hand touched my shoulder, and I wiped it away, my hand shaking. I stepped back, terrified.

'He doesn't know what he's doing. He doesn't know what he's doing. I need to get away'.

I turned away and started to walk as fast as I could. He grasped my arm tightly.

"Let go," I said with my voice somehow firm.

He didn't let go. I with my good hand taken, I kneed him hard in the stomach.

"Ahhh," he goaned.

That made him release my arm. Before I could run away, he pushed me down.

I pressed my hand up against the pavement, a sharp pain spread through out my arm. I didn't notice it before the pain before. I looked at down at my arm, it's bent the wrong way.

Holding his stomach, he gave himself time to recover, he started for me again.
