Chapter 21

I try to get up. Using my left arm I force my self up. My right arm throbs, sending a sharp pain through my arm and up to my shoulder. I wince.

Luke comes toward me faster then I can get up. A high pitched scream finds a way out of my mouth. He knocks me down hard. My vision starts to fade, but I fight it.

"Stay down," he says harshly.

I looked around for anything. Anything that could help me, people, sticks, anything.

There's nothing but the park. The park that separates Alex's house from mine, the park that is only 4 blocks away from my house.

Maybe, if I could get up, maybe I could run across the park. Maybe I could get away from Luke. Just maybe.

I hear a ringing in my head. I ignore it, figuring I was just hearing things, but then I see a dim light illuminating the sidewalk. My phone.

I stretch my arm out, I can't reach it. The caller ID reads 'Mom'. She must be worried about me.

I start to drag myself toward it when all of the sudden a foot crunches my phone.

"No!" I cry out.

He puts his hands on his neck and takes a deep breath. While he's distracted I get up. I'm used to the pain now.

I start to run towards the park. I don't look over my shoulder to see if Luke is following. I run as fast as I can, ignoring the burning in my lungs and the aching pain in my arm.

I burst through the door of my house, breathless.

"Honey!" My mom yells with a worried look on her brow.

"Oh my...your hurt!" She exclaims.

I nearly collapse on the floor.
