The Earth was asleep.
In the peaceful, placid, quiet breezes of the night, everything was still, submerged in a subtly sublime silver sheen that lay, unwavering, above the land. The mellow knee-high grasses were at the mercy of the weather. However, none of nature's elements desiderated to destroy this repose, and in this break from the usual hustle and bustle, the undergrowth thrived. The trees were structures of safety and sanctuary. The flowers were forces of refined fervor, blooming their arrays of colors and shapes, sizes and scents. A soft chirp arose every now and then from a congregation of crickets. It was pure, free, and untouched.
Then, a flash of green. Not a green of the grass, nor the trees, nor the flowers, nor any type of pre-existing foliage to lie outside the boundaries of the walls; rather, a darker, duller green, encompassing a sudden multitude of solid beings that moved through the night, bringing with them a thundering of hooves and a clanging of metal; an agglomeration of voices and a shaking of the earth. Such figures didn't have enough time to hold the light of the moon - their sumptuous speed flashed them in and out of darkness beneath the canopies of treetops, never staying in the luminescence or shadow long enough to remain a distinct color.
A sudden spark of red shot through the air. Someone's voice, louder than those of any other up until that point, penetrated the rest of the noise, and suddenly the figures were flying.
You were the first to soar into the sky.
As you rode the wind, allowing your maneuvering gear to latch onto a tree branch near the site of the disruptive color, you were in your zone. Sure, you'd had a little over three months to adjust to the new life within the new branch, but old habits died hard, and yours were especially resilient. Your natural ability with 3DMG had been furthered during your time with the Military Police and had only grown in the recent reassignment to the Survey Corps. Two titans materialized beneath you and you drew to an abrupt halt, spiraling down with extra force from your push-off from the tree you'd briefly touched upon, and with a few quick slashes one was down. Before you had a chance to near the other it was already falling to its feet. Tilting your head to the side but nonetheless continuing your ascent onwards, your eyes eventually caught on the sight of one of your subordinates. You shot him a nod of approval.
In many ways you were already well-acclimated to the new situation. The sight of titans didn't hold the same degree of wonder and fear they'd once bestowed upon you or your teammates; waking up with the sunrise had aligned with your sleeping schedule, and eating sparse, poorly-prepared meals had all become typical. And while you were rather grateful for all that, there was one thing you didn't ever think you could get used to.
The constant judgment of others.
Where you'd once held a respectable, high position in the Military Police - a position that hadn't actually been revoked or altered in any way by your switch to the Survey Corps - you were nothing more than a punching bag for most of your new branch-members. It was as though you were an alien who lacked any standard human knowledge. The quips and rude, poorly-controlled comments had been one thing, but the perpetual rebuking and criticism had been another. Back when you'd been in training it had never been like that...then again, you supposed that all things changed, and people were certainly no exception to that.
For whatever reason you'd become the official Survey Corps scapegoat. Luckily, this was something that seemingly only surrounded you, as your teammates weren't really picked on so much as ignored, but that didn't inherently make it pleasant. Someone didn't clean? Your fault. Someone skipped practice exercises? You'd been distracting them. You messed up? You were too inexperienced to handle the advanced combat moves - you should be stripped of your ranking and cast down to beneath the lowliest of low.
