You could think of a million better jobs to have than a servant girl.
That was what you thought about as you were sent to trim the gardens outside the largest building of the Reiss estate. With nothing but a pair of bush trimmers in your hands, the clothes on your back, and the uncomfortable shoes on your feet, you were sent to your hours of work. It oftentimes left you alone with nothing more than your thoughts, and you often questioned why you were there in the first place. But it was the life your parents had chosen, and it was the life you had been born into. There was nothing you could do about that.
As you set to work, humming to try and break out of the dullness of the day, you heard some of the other servants you'd become acquainted with shouting about someone. No...shouting at someone.
Peeking around the corner of your currently half-trimmed hedge, you saw a few other children yelling at another girl. She was short, and had what assumed was blonde hair, despite the fact that it was stained with dirt.
Probably just teasing. You sighed to yourself and returned to work. You'd experienced your fair share of name-calling yourself, but nearly everyone did, and you just figured it was this girl's turn to.
Until you heard the sound of something being thrown.
Startled, you darted out into the small clearing to find the kids now holding jagged rocks in the hands. Much to your disgust, there were already cuts and bruises on the girl's face, and the stones were flying through the air. This had driven you to your limit.
"Stop it!" You shouted, brandishing your bush trimmers.
They paused for a moment, distracted, and you just sort of stared back at them. You hadn't done anything like this before.
"What are you going to do; chase us with your little bush trimmers?" one of them retorted.
Sunlight glinted off your eyes as you replied, "That's a brilliant idea."
It only took a few hits on your part to send them running with some - albeit small - bloody wounds. Your arms were ragged from the sharp corners of the rocks they'd thrown at you, but you'd won. You returned to the girl who was still hunched on the ground.
"Th...thank you," she whispered, then gasped at the sight of your hurt body. "Oh my goodness, you didn't have to do that! You're really hurt..."
You gave a small smile. "It was worth it. I didn't...really know what I was doing, actually. But I'm [y/n]."
As you helped her to her feet, she returned the small grin. "I'm Historia. Please, let me help you out..."
You might've been a bit banged up, but your words were true. You'd stopped her from being further hurt and gained a new friend.
