Everyone was astonished by the new kid.

Not because he was cute. Or handsome, or kind, or rude, or funny-looking, or skinny, or overweight, or great at something, or awful at something. No, it was because of his height.

As far as you were concerned, you'd thought it impossible for someone your age to attain such a height and had ignored the gossip about him. But now that you were in a class with him, it was undeniable. As soon as you'd walked through the door, your eyes had fallen on the first person you'd seen: a lanky boy with brown hair. And an unbelievable height. You hadn't met him before. You hadn't seen his face, or even heard his name. But you immediately knew that this was the boy your friends had been talking about.

"Miss [y/n] [l/n], next to Bertholdt Hoover, please," the teacher instructed, and you froze.

You weren't really sure why you felt so petrified. He was just tall. You didn't know anything about him other than that he was tall. You had nothing to be afraid of, not really. But for you, knowing so little about a person made approaching them that much more frightening.

Quietly, you slipped into the desk your teacher had pointed out, and Bertholdt followed suit. After a few moments he looked somewhat pleased, but you weren't sure why.

Perhaps you'd ask. "Why are you so happy?"

"Hm?" He shifted in his seat to get a better view of you. "Oh. Well...it's kind of embarrassing, but...you haven't made fun of my height."

"'Make fun of it?' Why would I do that?" You raised an eyebrow.

He gave a gentle smile. "You'd be surprised."

"Would I? Would I, mister...er...Ber...Berthole...?"

His smile grew a little bigger. "Bertholdt."

The two of you didn't really say much else, but you could feel the unspoken bond. It was normal for you to enjoy someone's company in silence - and perhaps it was normal for him, too. But you were still glad you had spoken to him.
