One, three, five. Left-hand jab, left-hand hook, left-hand uppercut. Two, four, six. Right-hand jab, right-hand hook, right-hand uppercut. Kick. Foot connecting with the bag, sending it swinging back and forth, left and right. Knee. Kneecap driving into the bag and forcing it back and forth again, only this time forwards and backwards. Front ki-
"Y/n! What did that poor bag ever do to you?"
Startled, you withdrew mid-kick, whipping around to find your sister leaning over the staircase to the basement with a subtly amused glint in her eyes. "Oh. Hi."She rolled her eyes. "That's all I get? Well, alright then." Upon fully descending the flight of stairs, she took a deceivingly humble seat on the floor. She gave a nod in your direction. "Continue on. But I'm not going to be the one telling mom why your knees are all bloody."
You inhaled sharply. It wasn't until now that you'd realized the sensation of something warm trickling down your shins. It didn't hurt too much. But at the risk of further questioning from your sister, you trotted over to her and sat down.
The look of defeat in your eyes must've offset something in your sibling, because suddenly she was pulling you in for a hug. You didn't fight it. It lasted perhaps just a heartbeat longer than normal before your sister let you go.
"Did you see her at school today?" she queried, tilting her head to the side.
You shook your head. "No."
The hopeful smile on her face fell. "Oh. Well-"
"I know what you're going to say, and no, don't." You were quick to cut her off. The last thing you needed right now was a dose of your sister's crazy antics. Having to sit through more impromptu interviews with random kids she'd somehow managed to round up was just the sort of thing that would drive you over the edge - especially when there was only one out of what seemed to be hundreds of them that you'd even begun to be friends with.
Especially when that one had seemingly vanished.Ever since the first meeting, you and Annie had continued your get-togethers, albeit typically at school - or, for that matter, anywhere far out of reach from your sister's prying eyes. You didn't really know much about her, and she didn't really know much about you, but it seemed like that was what made your friendship all the more interesting. She seemed to not despise being around you, and you liked being in her company. To you, that was all friendship needed to be.
And yet, that mustn't have been what friendship needed to be to her. Not because she rarely talked, or because she never openly acknowledged you as a friend - you didn't need either of that. But what you did need was her presence. And for the past eight days, that had been something she hadn't given you.
It wasn't just you. She hadn't come to school, either - and despite your lengthy arguments with your sister and trying to persuade her not to look into things, she, being herself, had of course done exactly that. But she found nothing. No reason at all. She wasn't at home. Nobody had seen her. Hardly anyone seemed to even remember her.
But here you were. Doing what Annie had shown you. Practicing. That's something you knew she loved, something she'd bothered to tell you about, something she had shown you. The one thing she had told you. This, but not that she would be gone.
"We're going to find her, you know," your sister continued, cutting straight through your thoughts, "whether you're happy with the way I go about searching or not." She offered a grin.
You couldn't help but smile back. "Yeah. Thanks."
