(F I V E Y E A R S B E F O R E)
Although it had been less than a month since you, a boy named Henri, another girl named Ada, and, of course, Moblit, had been assigned to Squad Hanji, the fast-paced days and strange misadventures seemed to drag on longer. You'd already become well acquainted with your squadmates and their habits. There was Ada, who was a soft-spoken, kind woman, just a year or two younger than you. She was always able to brighten any of her teammate's days. Henri was the youngest, and acted it, too; always cracking jokes and making your team laugh.
And finally, there was Moblit, who had undergone the Training Corps stages alongside Hanji, but had purposefully kept his ability hidden in fear of being assigned to her squad - of course, his attempts had failed. You'd known him the longest, having undergone two years of your own training with him, and, of course, the most recent transfer. However, there was something he was hiding from you. You could tell.
No matter how desperately you wanted to know what he kept behind his closed mouth, when the alarm siren woke you up early one morning, you realized full and well that it'd have to wait.
You'd never experienced an emergency; not one where the alarm had to be sounded, at least. Nevertheless you were up and on your horse with the rest of your equally dazed squad in moments. Hanji had taken the lead, and it wasn't until Ada dared to ask what was going on that your questions were answered.
Hanji's response had been one that you would never forget: Titans have breached Wall Maria.
Henri and Ada had fallen silent, eyes wide and expressions of pure, horrifying shock froze upon their faces. Moblit was a different story. "Squad Leader - that's not possible; how did-"
"Anything's possible," Hanji cut him off, her voice wielding a sharp edge that it hadn't ever before, "and we're going to find out how. Are you all prepared?"
You bucked up and replied, "Yes." Out of everyone - with the exception of Hanji, of course - you seemed to be the least frightened. Perhaps it was because you'd seen titans before, or maybe that you'd just gotten used to the sense of dread and learned how to combat it. Whatever the reason was, nothing could have prepared you for what lied ahead. The first titan you encountered was a small five meter class, which Ada and Moblit took down in a few quick moves. Then a seven meter. You and Henri had dispatched him after a close call. A ten meter. You, Ada, and Moblit cut it to shreds. An eight meter. Hanji decided to take care of this one, now that you were within the main area of breached territory.
Your heart twisted in your chest as you took in the sight. The ground was littered with shattered glass, broken wood, crumbled houses, all painted over in something sickeningly red. You almost screamed at the sight of the first dead civilian. You'd seen death before - you had been in the Survey Corps for awhile now - but there, death had been a risk that everyone was willing to accept. Here...these people had done nothing. They hadn't signed up for this. They'd just wanted to live. And love. And dream. And here, their desires had been snapped in half, just like everything else around you.
Now it was chaos. Hanji had given up trying to order you all around; merely, she'd reverted to the 'kill all titans you can' tactic of desperation. You'd been paired up with Ada and Henri to cover for Moblit and Hanji, who were going to make an advance and try to drive the rest of the titans back. Everywhere you looked, there were titans. Titans and soldiers and civilians. Dead titans and dead soldiers and dead civilians.
You were used to leading others from your previous experiences. Therefore, when a twelve-meter evaded the other soldiers and was headed straight for your group, you shouted: "Henri, get its heels! Ada, cover him and I; attack if you can!" Within moments you were soaring above its smoking head, your 3DMG successfully anchoring you to it, and you spiraled down towards its face. Henri must've done his job, as the back of the Titan's head landed beneath your feet as it fell to the ground. You sliced deep within its neck, running across its back and attaching yourself to the next titan. Wait...what? The other squad was supposed to have taken that one out. Where the hell were they?
A scream from Henri made everything clear. If you could've paused in midair, you would've; would've run to him and helped him and saved him and made sure he was okay. But you were dangerously close to your titan now. "Ada! Henri! Come on!" You shouted, panic rising in your chest. Only a few yards away now.
