Jackie's POV
We're walking to another camp site. We're going there to check it out. See if everything is running smoothly, and if they need more supplies. It's just my barracks, and one general. I just got a letter from Niall, but I can't read it right this second. He hasn't written in awhile. I have it tucked under my plate. I'll just read it later, no big deal.
I was talking with Nick when we heard gun shots. We all took cover as more shots came. They've been following us. My controlling officer even took the path where we wouldn't be easily spotted. You can easily tell that it's a small pack. I popped up from the small mound and started shooting. I duck back down to reload my gun and look over at Nick to see if he's ok. I finish reloading and look over at Nick one last time. He's down.
"Man down, man down!" I yell over all the noise. I crawl over to him and apply pressure to where he's hit. It's in a really bad place too, too close to his heart.
"Man down!" I yell louder. I don't think about keeping cover, I'm only worried about Nick, and I feel something hit my knee. I'm down on the ground now as the shooting slowly ceases.
"Man down!" I try to yell louder. Five guys from my barracks come rushing over to us and I can't hear any guns going off now. Nick is passed out now from the pain. Mike and Erik put Nicks arms around their shoulders and they drag him along. I try to stand on my own but the pain in my knee puts me back on my ass.
"Don't move Dunkle. Your hit too." Dylan says calmly. He takes rope out of his bag and ties it tightly right above my knee. I try to get up again, but he pushes me back.
"Come on! We're almost there, I can walk by myself."
"Stop trying to be all tough. Just let me help you." I give up and let him help me up. He then puts my left arm around his shoulders and helps me along. Not long after I pass out as well from the pain.
-
I wake up in a strange bed. I look around and it doesn't look like the small makeshift hospital at one of the camps. It's too white. It reminds me of my hospital visits when I was in a bad place. I look to my left and Nick is laying there. I look down to see a bandage around my left knee. A nurse casually walks in.
"Oh your awake!" She rushes over to me and checks a machine next to me. "Do you feel any pain?"
"Ya. It's like a nine." I remember nurses always asking me that whenever I had my little visits.
"I'll get you something for that. Just to warn you your probably going to have problems with your left knee from here on out. Sadly the only think we could do is extract the bullet fragments. The tissue is badly torn, and it's too swollen and sore for us to operate on it now. You can always get surgery in the future." I nod.
"Um, is he ok?" I ask motioning towards Nick. She looked at him then back to me.
"I'm sorry I can't tell you any information about him. Policy."
"Please? He's my friend, we're in the same barracks. His name is Nick." She seemed to be thinking for a minute.
"Ok." She sighs in defeat. "Well, he seems to be doing well. He got shot in the chest two millimeters away from his heart cavity. I'll get your morphine." She left. I look over at Nick. His chest slowly moving up and down. I close my eyes for a second, then open them again. I reach my hand out trying to hold his hand but fail. The nurse walks in and gives me a small sad smile. I put my arm back on my bed. She inserts a clear liquid from a needle into my IV line.
"It will just help with the pain. It won't make you drowsy." I feel like huffing and saying 'I know' but I decide not to be rude and just listen to her. "If you need anything just buzz." She starts to walk away. She turns around suddenly. "One more thing. When you came in this was under your vest." She hands me the letter. "And this was around your neck. We had to take it off for you to go into surgery." She hands me my neckless Harry gave me. I put it on right away and wrap my hand around it.
