Emily sighed and walked into her and Ed's house. Ed was on the couch. "Ed, we need to talk."
"About what?" He asked standing up. "Everything alright?" He asked her concerned.
"Ed... you're never home. And... I think I should..." His eyebrows drew on confusion.
"You should what?" He asked worriedly.
"I think we should break up."
Ed froze. "What?" He asked. "B-Break up?" He gulped. "Why?"
"Because you're never home! And I'm sick of missing you and wishing you were here and never know when you'd be home and I just want... you to be home. Every day. And if you can't..." She sighed.
"Emily I try to spend as much time with you as possible! Every day I have a day off I spend it with you! And I thought that..."
"Thought what?" She asked him.
"Only weeks ago... you promised me you were the one. And you promised our son-"
"Don't bring him into this!" Emily said helplessly.
Ed pulled up his sleeves and showed one of his tattoos. The puzzle piece. "I thought you were the missing piece. Every day I've thought about asking you if you wanted a tattoo like it. And I'd get the missing piece. Since you were the missing piece of my life."
"Ed, can you tell me when the last time we went out was where no one asked for your autograph or took a picture with you or pointed at you or the press took picture of us?" Ed paused.
"I don't know..."
"Exactly. I can't do you being away so much and all the fame. I can't do that. I'm just Emily. I'm a news reporter. I write about the world. What happens at certain places at certain times. I look like a gold digger. Like I just want fame. I just want to write. Be one of those cat ladies who live alone. And Ed... you have all this fame and publicity. I don't want that exactly. I've had the press take pictures of me when I just want to get a coffee or go out anywhere. And Ed... you're a celebrity suddenly. That makes me not want to put my faith in you as much. With everyone knowing your name." Ed ran his hand through his hair at her words.
"But breaking up? We said for better or for worse. We may not be married... but I hoped that someday we might be." He said.
"Ed I just... I can't deal with being away from you for so long. I just... I want to be with you. And the next time your leaving... it'll be five months I'm away from you. I can't deal with that."
Ed sighed and there was a silence. "Did we just break up?" He asked not looking at her. She nodded.
"Yeah. We did."
Ed felt his heart crumble into a million pieces. As if his whole world fell apart suddenly. Like everything he had was taken from him. Like anyone he had ever loved had never even known him. Ed couldn't process this almost. They both thought they were to last forever. And then Ed doubted himself, thinking no girl could ever love him like she did, and like he could never love any girl like he loved her. Because he loved her like it was true love. And she did too. And they were right to do so, up until that very moment.
Emily started to walk to the door. "Emily?" She turned her head. "No matter how long you're gone... if you ever want to be back with me... if you ever fall for someone new and he breaks your heart... just know I'll be waiting here for you."
Emily got into her car and turned on the radio. She was driving to the airport for an hour, and the only thing that would play were breakup songs, reminding her of Ed. The lady on the radio finally started to speak after Ads. "And coming up next we have 'The One That Got Away' by Katy Perry." Emily's eyes glance at the radio and back on the black road. Her elbow was on one side of her car and she decided to sing to it, knowing she'd regret it.
