once upon a time there was an elephant, named Ralph
who was afraid of the night
the darkness really scared him
and the creepy, crawly creatures gave him a fright
"you will grow out of this," his mommy said
"when you are just a little bit older"
his daddy scowled at him, a little
"you're an elephant, be a little bolder"
but try as he might, Ralph just couldn't
get comfortable when the sun went down
he still didn't like the eerie darkness
or having to sleep on the ground
one day, while Ralph was playing
with his elephant buddies, near a stream
he noticed a clump of cherry trees
he got an idea, his smile grew and beamed
later that night, while everyone slept
Ralph gathered up all the red berries he could find
and stomped them with his big feet
until they were a red mush, fine
see Ralph had a great plan
to help him get a good night's sleep
he started dabbing his body with the red mush
quietly, not daring to make a peep
the next morning, when the other elephants awoke
Ralph was no where to be found
the other elephants started looking for him
in the forest and on the ground
hours later, still no Ralph anywhere ar all
the elephants all gathered at the stream
"where or where is my little Ralphie," his mommy cried
"this is such a bad dream."
"i'm here," came a voice from above
all the elephants started looking around
they could hear Ralph, but couldn't see him
not in the stream, he forest or the ground
suddenly, the ground shook slightly
as Ralph appeared, out of nowhere
his mommy gasped, daddy too
one second no Ralph, the next he was there
"why are you covered in red dots?"
his mommy wondered out loud
"and where in the world were you hiding ?
somewhere up in the clouds?"
Ralph laughed and shook his head
"no. i got this great idea you see.
i stomped berries and painted myself with red dots
so i could hide and sleep in the cherry trees"
so, in the mornings, if you are near elephant stream
and there are no elephants to be found
don't despair, for just a few minutes later
there will be dozens all around
and don't try to pick the cherries
they might not be cherries, you see
for now all elephants cover themselves with red dots
and sleep soundly in the cherry trees
and they all slept happily ever after
