Grump

Once upon a time fantastic

as I held my pants elastic

and set to dig into a timely feast

I heard a screeching, evil beast

'Twas fear that caught in my throat

a bite too large that was a lump

and as I reached to clear the moat

I heard some chanter yelling 'Grump!'

Swallow hard all you who hear

when those so mute break the air

Then you know the beast draws near

and then you must indeed take care

From my door with lantern aloft

I spied the creature spoken of

Standing still and speaking soft

the monks did look up above

There red eyes and swiveled head

above the belfry of the dead

Did peer into my living soul

and turn the courtyard all too cold

Never had a thing as this

broken the peace that did here exist

No devil dared on these grounds

as the evil that had fallen now

Yet all at once it rose to fly

with wings across the open sky

and as I surmised the situation

it meant to use that occasion

Straight to pluck my wayward flesh

the spawn would now do it's best

and yet I stood in frozen defiance

without a friend or alliance

Grasping the handle and pulling true

The door slammed shut just in time

The shrouded one did not get through

as I cowered just inside

All night it waited and it watched

as my fire's light grew dark

and I grew brave in that spot

determined in my mortal heart

So I stood as it eyed me

through the window frame

I climbed up into the beams

and hid myself away

In time the beast could not wait

and broke its way into my house

It had a very awkward gate

as it came to play cat and mouse

In my time to contemplate

I realized it must have mouths to feed

and we would be what they ate

If I didn't try at least

This I could not allow that day

So I jumped down from the rafters

I gave it hell but it got away

and they all lived happily ever after
