Two months have passed since the Snowball. Two months since Mike Wheeler has his heart fixed and then broken again in a span of a few hours. He had reunited with Eleven, a telekinetic girl from Hawkins Lab who he befriended and grew to love, only to have her die a few hours later. He had been broken ever since.
After Eleven's death, Mike had gone back to his depressed ways and became a shell of who he used to be. He was always angry or upset and barely talked anymore. He wasn't the leader of the party anymore. Instead, he was just in the background not having any fun and just being there. He never liked playing Dungeons and Dragons or going to the arcade. Everyone else had moved on, but Mike just couldn't. He loved Eleven too much to be able to move on from her.
Mike vowed to himself that he would never fall in love again.
He wished that it could have been like before, where Eleven has a chance of being alive. But it was different. She actually died in front of him, not moving or breathing. Just lifeless and frozen cold to the touch.
Lucas Sinclair, Dustin Henderson, and Will Byers tried to cheer him up by offering trips to go out or by cracking jokes from time to time. But Mike would either refuse or just not smile. He barely even felt like they were friends anymore since they were always hanging out with their new friend, Max Mayfield. Mike didn't like her one bit. He thought of her as annoying and that she was trying to replace El. She had no idea what the party has been through at all so he felt like she didn't belong in the group.
If anyone wanted to find Mike these days, he was either in his basement sitting in the fort, sulking at school, or in his room thinking. He didn't do much other than that.
Currently, he was at school sulking during science class. Lucas and Dustin were nonstop talking to Max and Will was listening in the conversation. Mike was just there. He looked annoyed as usual and barely even paid attention to the class. Lately his grades had been dropping in all of his classes and he didn't even care. He never cared about school in the first place.
Mr. Clarke was talking about whatever science stuff he was talking about. Everyone seemed interested, except for Mike. He turned his head over to the window and just stared outside. He hated this and just wanted school to be over so he could go home. He didn't get why he had to go to school anyway.
Mike didn't want to be in school. He didn't want to play games. He didn't want to go around anywhere. He didn't want Max in the party. He didn't want to have fun.
The only thing he wanted was for El to be alive.
...
At the high school, Nancy Wheeler was sitting in English class. She was barely even listening to the lesson since she kept on thinking about her little brother, Mike. She felt what he was feeling because she still felt awful about her best friend, Barb, who died because of the Upside Down. She felt bad for Mike because he was too young to experience this sort of heartbreak that he endured. She tried to be there for him and to comfort him, but he kept on shutting her out, unlike before when he would come to her for comfort.
She was broken out of her thoughts when the door opened. The principal was coming in the classroom with a girl no one recognized. She had wavy brown hair that put up in a small ponytail and had brown eyes. She was wearing a white long sleeved shirt and some ripped jeans and a pair of white converse. She looked a little odd as well due to her looking nervous.
"This is the new student that came here today. Would you like to introduce yourself?" The principal asked her. The girl shrugged, still looking nervous. "No need to be nervous. Everyone gets nervous the first day," the principal said.
The teacher noticed how the girl was looking way to nervous so he decided to take control. "Ladies and gentlemen, meet Reyna Snyder," he introduced.
The girl looked over at him. "Rey. No one calls be Reyna. Just Rey," she said. The teacher nodded as she took an empty seat that happened to be next to Nancy.
Nancy looked over at her, feeling bad for her that she was nervous. Maybe this was a good chance to try and move on from Barb by making a new girl best friend. Sure, she had her boyfriend, Steve Harrington, and her other friend, Jonathan Byers, but she needed a girl. Someone who she could talk to about girly things with. Someone who she could tell everything and not have it be blabbed. That could've been it with Eleven, but she had unexpectedly died, so now this Rey girl was her chance.
...
During lunch, Nancy was sitting at her lunch table with Steve and Jonathan. They were talking to each other and complaining about school. Then Nancy saw Rey standing in the middle of the cafeteria, having no idea where to sit. The teen excused herself from the table and walked up to the new girl with a small smile on her face.
"Hey there. Are you looking for a place to sit?" Nancy asked. Rey nodded in response. "You can come and sit with me if you want. I'm Nancy."
Rey nodded. "Rey," she said as she followed Nancy to the lunch table. They sat down at the table and Nancy introduced Rey to Steve and Jonathan.
"So where are you from?" Nancy asked.
Rey hesitated for a minute before responding, "A few towns away. I moved because I got adopted." She seemed nervous when she said that. Nancy thought that she was just nervous about being in a new school and that she wasn't so sure if she was making friends. The teen gave her a look of sympathy.
"I'll help you out if you want. After school, you can come over to my house and we can hang out," Nancy offered.
Rey gave her a small smile and nodded. "I'd love to. Thank you," she said.
Nancy had no idea what she was getting into at that moment.
