While everyone else was over at the Byers' house, Mike was still sitting in the fort of his basement. He had lifted up the drape though because he stopped crying. He lifted up the picture that he was still holding and held it close to him. It was the only picture he had of Eleven and he would treasure it forever. It was the only reminder of her that he had, other than the blanket fort. For some reason, they made him feel like she was still there somehow.
Mike put the picture down beside him and picked up his supercom. He rarely ever did this, but it comforted him somehow. Others would think he was even more crazy than he already was, but he didn't care. He pulled up the antenna and tried to not cry as he switched channels.
"El? Hey, it's Mike. I know you aren't here right now and that you are gone, but, don't know. Maybe I just think you are somewhere, you know? I never told you this, but when you due, you go to a place where you live forever in peace. I hope you're there right now and you're happy. I just miss you," Mike said. He took a deep breath before continuing. "You may not even hear this anyway. I guess I just think you will because you are really amazing like that, you know? I love you so much El. I wish you were here with me right now. I love you more than life itself. I'll be there with you in the happy place soon. I promise we'll be together again."
Then he closed the antenna and set the supercom aside. A few seconds later, Mike heard a noise coming from the supercom that sounded like static. He looked at it in confusion as he picked it up and pulled up the antenna again. Then his eyes widened as he heard a voice from the other side.
"M-Mike?!" The voice cried out. "Mike! MIKE!"
Mike gasped and started tearing up. It was El's voice! "EL! EL IS THAT YOU?!" He screamed into the walkie talkie.
"Mike help me! Please help me!" The voice said again.
Tears were fully streaming down Mike's cheeks. "EL WHERE ARE YOU?! PLEASE TELL ME WHERE YOU ARE! I NEED YOU I NEED YOU!" He screamed. "Please tell me where you are!"
"Bad! Bad place!" She said.
"I'm coming El! IM COMING! JUST REMAIN CALM!" Mike yelled. The static ceased and he was fully crying into his hands. What had just happened?! Was he going crazy or did it actually happen? He didn't want to be going insane. He wanted it to be an actual event that happened and not his imagination.
Could El still be alive?
His thoughts were broken when he saw his mother coming down the stairs. Mike looked up at her and wiped away his tears. He put his supercom down beside him and pulled the drape to the blanket fort down to cover himself away from Karen.
"Michael, come out of there. Your father and I have to talk to you about something," Karen said.
"Well that's a first," Mike muttered to himself. "What about? That I have to cheer up and be normal? That I have to pretend nothing happened? That I have to move on from someone I love? Not happening anymore!"
Karen sighed at her son. "We just want you to be happy, Mike. You have to eat something soon. I don't want you to get sick, honey," she said. "We miss the old you. You have to get over her eventually. There are other girls out there, you know."
Mike became angry when she said the last sentence. He lifted up the drape and glared at her furiously. He stood up and marched towards her, still glaring furiously. How dare she say that, especially when he's suffering and when he just heard her and may be going crazy!
"Oh, there are other girls out there?! THATS ALL YOU CARE ABOUT?! ME GETTING A FUCKING DATE WITH SOME RANDOM GIRL?! YEAH, NOT HAPPENING! You have no idea how I feel about El! I LOVED HER! I STILL DO! NO GIRL IS LIKE HER! THERE IS NO FUCKING WAY THAT IS HAPPENING!" Mike screamed. "I AM NOT REPLACING THE GIRL I LOVE WITH SOME RANDOM HOE! HAVE YOU EVER LOVED SOMEONE?! NO YOU HAVENT BECAUSE YOU JUST MARRIED DAD FOR MONEY! YOU MAY DENY IT, BUT EVERYONE KNOWS! EVERYONE KNOWS THAT YOU MARRIED A USELESS ASS!"
Now it was Karen's turn to become angry. She glared at her son, whose glare was still going on her. "All I'm trying to do is help you! You have no right to say these things just because you lost someone! You are too young to love someone anyway! It's time for you to move on from that girl!" She yelled. Then she marched over to the blanket fort, preparing to do something.
Mike's eyes widened as he saw her match over to the fort. "Mom, what are you doing?!" He said in worry. Then she started throwing the blankets off. "NO STOP IT!" He yelled. "STOP!" But Karen did listen. She knocked over the chair, threw the pillows to the other side of the room, and the blankets to the side. "NO MOM NO! STOP PLEASE!" Mike kept yelling. But it was too late. The fort was destroyed. He fell onto his knees, tears streaming down his face. Then Karen noticed the picture of El and Mike dancing together. She tore it up into pieces and threw them onto the ground. Mike crawled over to the pieces of the picture and picked them up. Then he looked up at his mother with an upset look. "HOW COULD YOU?!"
"Like I said, I'm trying to help you move on! You don't need this fort and that picture just makes you more upset," Karen said in a strong tone.
Mike glared at her while sobbing hard. "WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?! YOURE THE WORST MOTHER EVER!" He screamed. Then he stood up, grabbed his backpack and started to pack up some of his stuff, including his supercom, blankets, a pillow, clothes, a flashlight, and the ripped photo. Then he went upstairs to Nancy's room and took a gun out of her drawer and put it in the backpack. Then he stormed back downstairs where his mother had a confused look.
"Michael, what are you doing?!" She asked in a worried tone.
"Leaving forever! I can't stand living here anymore!" Mike said, furiously.
"You can't leave! You're my son!" Karen said.
Mike glared at her. "Not anymore! I never was anyway! You and Dad never cared! You never cared about what I was doing! You guys are USELESS! You never support me in anything! You guys never even showed up to my science fairs! You don't notice anything! You prefer paying attention to Holly and Nancy instead of your only son! So you know what?! You just lost a son because I'm never coming back!" He said. Then he went out the front door and slammed it behind him, leaving Karen standing there in shock.
He never looked back.
