At the lab, Hopper, Eleven, Mike, Rey, Bob, Keelan, Cat, and Ryder were finally on the level where the gate was. When they entered the room, they noticed a lot of Demodogs in there. They all ducked behind the corner in order to not be noticed by them. Now they were all stuck, having no idea what to do to get past them.
Suddenly, Rey came up with an idea. She shapeshifted herself into a Demodog to blend in with the other ones. The others watched as she went into the room and led the other demodogs away. Then there were lots of loud whimpers and growls coming from the room and then Rey came out as her normal self, looking exhausted and blood pouring down her nose. Everyone looked at her in surprise.
"What? I took care of them," Rey said, shrugging at them and acting casual. "Now, this lift over here won't fit all of us. Some of us have to stay behind and guard the lift in case there are any surviving bad men and monsters," she said.
"Well, no matter what, El and I have to be on the lift so we can close the gate," Mike said. "We'll need protectors just in case though."
"I'll go with the kids just so they have me there," Hopper said.
Rey nodded. "I'll go on the lift too," she said.
"I'll stay up here and guard," Bob volunteered. "If any trouble goes on, I'll be there as a distraction. I'm good at distractions anyway," he added in.
Hopper looked over at him and put a hand on his shoulder. "Are you sure, Newby? These things are dangerous, you know," he said, making sure that his old high school classmate would be okay. He knew that if Bob were to not survive, Joyce would be heartbroken and Hopper couldn't let that happen to her.
Bob nodded in response. "I'll be fine. But if I don't make it out, tell Joyce that I love her and tell the boys that I think they are amazing kids," he said. Hopper nodded at him and patted his shoulder.
"I guess Keelan and I will stay with Bob as well so he can have some protection," Ryder said. "He May be needing it."
Keelan nodded. "We'll stay up here just in case. We all won't fit anyway. Cat, where do you want to go?" She asked.
Cat shrugged. "If there's room on the lift I'll go there, but if not, I'll just fucking wait up here where there may not be any action happening," she said.
Hopper shook his head, as he was already standing on the lift with El, Mike, and Rey. "Nope, no room. Sorry," he said, lowering the lift. Cat groaned as she watched them go down to the giant gate.
Once they saw the gate, Mike and El knew how hard they were going to use their energy for this. They looked at each other and took their hands. They gave each other reassuring looks, promising each other and themselves that everything will be okay. The two kids took deep breaths as they lifted their hands up and focused their mind on the gate. Hopper and Rey were looking out in case there were any Demodogs nearby.
The Shadow Monster could be seen through the gate, growling at the four. It seemed as if it knew what they were trying to do and that he was angry. Hopefully, he wouldn't be able to stop them from succeeding their mission. They had to succeed so the world would be saved and that they would all be away from the Upside Down forever.
Hopper and Rey noticed a bunch of demodogs entering the room and trying to jump on them. The police chief shot at them while Rey shapeshifted into a Demodog a bunch of times and attacked them. They had to protect Mike and El no matter what, otherwise, the gate would remain open and continue growing.
Suddenly, shocks of lightning, water, dashes of a person, and lights came from around the corner. Rey and Hopper looked over to where it was coming from and saw Max with Dylan, Damien, Heather, and Jordan. Rey's eyes widened in shock and Hopper looked confused at the sudden Alliance between Max and the other experiments. Nevertheless, they continued distracting all the demodogs, protecting El and Mike.
Mike and El were struggling a bit and started losing energy. The boy was losing his energy the fastest, but his stubbornness wouldn't let him stop trying to close the gate. The gate was slowly starting to close, but it was getting way to slow. They were worried that it wouldn't work, but it had to. It just had to. Blood was pouring out of their noses and their ears as they kept using their powers. Mike's eyes were starting to turn black again, just as they had before when he attacked Dylan.
Just then, the Shadow Monster's Black dust cloud started coming out of the gate and heading straight for Mike and El. They became worried, not wanting to die and blow the mission. The two tried using more of their energy to push away the dust cloud, but it wasn't working.
But the cloud never hit them.
Everyone else noticed the cloud coming straight at Mike and El. One of them flew right at the cloud and let it go inside of her. Everyone's eyes widened as they heard screams coming from her, as well as other people from above them. The person fell to the ground and screamed more from the monster inside of her, not being possessed, but instead being torn apart from the inside. The Shadow Monster growler angrily at the sacrifice, wanting it to have been Mike and El instead. Max was the one to check it out first, followed by the others while Rey and Hopper looked from the lift.
Mike and El couldn't look, but they could definitely hear who it was. They became angry at the Shadow Monster and started screaming. That monster was not going to hurt anyone else, even if it was their former enemy. The two started levitating in midair as they stuck out both arms. The gate started closing even faster as they screamed louder. Hopper and Rey watched in amazement while everyone down below looked on.
It continued for a while until the gate finally closed shut, with Mike and El dropping the the lift. Mike was passed out while El breathed heavily, gasping for air. Hopper and Rey checked on them, making sure they were okay.
"You guys go! Now! Along with her!" Hopper ordered. "Go upstairs and meet up with Bob and the others. We'll be up soon!" They all nodded while running off, carrying the person with them.
Hopper hugged El as she cried into him while Rey picked up the unconscious Mike. As soon as El calmed down, Rey used the controls to lift up the lift, only to find a horrible surprise at the top.
