Mike gasped for breath as he woke up from the void and panted heavily. Rey looked at him with concern and put a hand on his shoulder. The boy wiped the blood that was streaming down his nostrils and managed to catch his breath. After struggling to stand up from the chair, Mike got up and weakly walked out of the shed and away from the Byer's house. Rey followed him, still really confused about what was going on.
She followed him all the way back to the cabin and entered it. Mike picked up his backpack with his supplies in it, a pair of goggles, gloves, and the bandana he used earlier. Then he grabbed a shovel and left the cabin.
"What are you doing, Mike?" Rey asked as they left the cabin.
"I'm going to look for a gate so I can get El back. I don't care what you say and I don't care if you try to stop me. I'm helping the girl I love. She's in the Upside Down and I'm going to save her. She wants me to find her," Mike said and continued walking through the woods. Rey still followed him though, making him groan. "I'm going alone. You aren't coming with me."
Rey gave him a look. "Mike, you can't go alone. You need some help," she said.
Mike pressed his lips together, opened up his backpack, and took out a spare supercom. "Doesn't matter. If anything goes wrong, I'll call backup. If you hear anything about a gate or anything Will says about the Shadow Monster, call me," he said. Then he continued forward through the woods, this time without Rey following him.
The former experiment had no choice but to let him go on his own. She went back to the Byer's house to check up on things there. When she got back, she saw everyone there in the living room, minus Joyce and Hopper. They were in Will's room to talk to him about things to do with what he was seeing.
Nancy was the first to notice that Mike wasn't with her. She stood with with a look that was mixed with confusion and worry. Rey knew that she couldn't tell her about Mike's powers, so she had to quickly come up with an excuse as Nancy asked where her brother was.
"He's trying to find El. He wouldn't let me help," she explained the best she could.
Mike's sister groaned and sat back down. "Of course he did that. Whenever it comes to El, he gets stubborn about it," she commented.
That was when Joyce and Hopper came out of Will's room, holding a bunch of drawings. Everyone gathered around them as they looked at the drawings. They all knew that Will drew them since he was the artistic one out of all of them. Joyce then got up and started assembling all the drawings together. Hopper helped her out while everyone watched in confusion. Joyce then had to explain that the drawings connected and that they had to assemble them.
Everyone participated in assembling the drawings together and making sure they all connected with each other. After a while, the drawings were all around the house, as if they were laid out to look like some kind of map. The colors looked like the colors of the Upside Down, which made the group think that this had to do with the Upside Down.
Rey analyzed the drawings the most out of everyone. The shapes that the drawings were making all looked familiar for some reason that she didn't know. It was so curious and weird to her. Then she realized something.
"This Definitely has something to do with the Upside Down. They look like some sort of tunnels. But I don't know where they could be or why they are in this pattern," Rey explained.
Everyone sat down on the floor, trying to not mess up the drawings. They thought about how they were all connected and how they were about the Upside Down. Suddenly, Joyce shot up to her feet, which made everyone look over at her.
"I know what to do."
...
Mike was wandering through the woods with his supplies. It had felt like forever that he had been out there alone, looking for a gate to find El. He needed to find her desperately. El's life depended on it.
Suddenly, he heard static coming from his supercom. He pulled it out of his backpack, curious about who it was. He pulled the antenna up to be able to hear the voice from the other side. It was Rey, asking for him to come in while adding in that she had no idea how to use it to connect with him.
"I'm here Rey. I copy. Over," Mike replied.
"Okay good. We found out something," Rey said. There was no reply at the other end. "Uh, Mike? Are you still there?"
"I can't respond until you say over," Mike informed her.
He heard he sigh at the other end before she said. "We found out something. Over," she said.
"What is it? Over."
"Will has been drawing these weird drawings. We think that they connect to the Upside Down somehow, but we're not sure. Joyce is calling in her boyfriend to figure out what exactly they are. Apparently, he's a brain. Over," Rey explained.
"Keep me in touch. I'll try to find wherever this place is. It might lead me to El. Over and out," Mike said, closing the antenna of the supercom and continuing forward.
After a few more hours of walking, Mike came across a pumpkin patch field. He had heard reports that the pumpkins had been contaminated, and now he was finally getting a glimpse of it. The pumpkins were covered with slime and flies were swarming around it. Mike knew that this had to do with the Upside Down. A gate had to be there.
The boy took his shovel and started digging in a part of the patch. At first it was dirt, before it ended up being some goo. Mike realized that he lost track of time and that it was nighttime now. He had been so busy digging that he didn't even realize the time. But he didn't care because now he had a way to get to the Upside Down. He put on his goggles and put the bandana around his mouth and out of the gloves. Then he put his backpack on and took out his flashlight and went into the hole.
Mike was going to find El, no matter what the cost was.
