The backyard was only this decorated for Hannah's birthday, but somehow Lauren didn't mind the balloons and the stuff hanging on the trees that her girlfriend had spent all morning putting up. Surely, Lauren had almost being forced into staying in her room for most of the morning since Camila had claimed that she couldn't see what they were doing downstairs, but what completely ruined the surprise factor that she wanted to have was the fact that Camila completely forgot that Lauren could see the backyard from the window in their bedroom. Still, Lauren appreciated the gesture and feigned surprise as soon as Camila uncovered her eyes and she saw that she was standing in the middle of the decorated backyard, just to make her girlfriend happy.
Her close family was around chatting away with each other; Danielle, Toby and Baxter were playing around with Hannah; Lauren's dad was dragging Camila's mom to meet the family and Lauren sat at one of the wooden benches near the food table, appreciating and observing everything and everyone. Her family was there, her friends, her girlfriend, what else she could ask for?
"Are you making sure no one steals the food?", Lauren heard. She turned around and found Toby getting closer with a plastic plate in his hands.
Lauren smiled at the boy who wore a smirk on his face. "I'm just resting a bit.".
Toby grabbed a few chips of the bowl and placed them on his plate. "Can I make you some company? Your sister has way too energy for me to keep up.".
Lauren chuckled and motioned for Toby to seat down next to her.
"Have you seen Camila?", Lauren asked, "I haven't seen her in half an hour.".
"She had to go pick up your cake, the bakery got a little late doing it.".
Lauren relaxed and smiled, her girlfriend really thought about everything.
"Stop smiling, you look like you killed somebody and managed to hide the body.". Toby said, and Lauren slapped him lightly on the arm, making him almost drop the plate of chips. "What?".
"I can smile if I want, I'm happy.", Lauren stated proudly.
"Well, you should save some of it, because you still have to open the presents and believe me, you will smile.". Toby said, winked and got up to leave, joining Danielle again who was running from Hannah around one of the trees.
Lauren wondered what type of present she would receive, but she was fine with whatever her friends and family had got her. Truly, she had everything she wanted.
From the corner of her eyes, she saw the glass door that connected the house to the backyard slide open and Camila appeared with a box that seemed way too heavy for her to balance it in one hand as she closed the door with the other. Lauren had half a mind to get up and go help, but Camila managed it easily without her.
Still, Lauren got up and went to her girlfriend.
"Hey!", she greeted, getting closer.
Camila looked at her and smiled, starting to walk towards the food table so she could put down the cake. "Hey, are you enjoying your party?".
"Yes, but it would be best if my girlfriend stopped running around and spent some time with me.".
Camila put down the cake and turned around to Lauren, placing her arms around the girl's neck. "I'm sorry if I want a perfect birthday for my perfect girl."
Lauren smile grew wider and, surprisingly, shyer too. It didn't matter how long they were together because Lauren felt the same butterflies and the same shyness she felt when Camila first complimented her, on that simple first folded paper on her locker.
