chapter fourteen!
GAUCHE
Mina used to make light of sports. She didn't take any of them seriously because for her, the pain and buckets of sweat from all the hard work did not seem appealing. The games were intense versions of childish games once played during childhood; like not letting the balloon touch the ground— and that was Volleyball. The brunette used to find no amusement in such events but here she was in a stadium filled with fans who did not share the same sentiments as her. They were thrilled, fervently cheering for their respective teams like they were heroes out to save the world.
And maybe these guys really were heroes, fighting to prove themselves and to become people looked up to by everyone.
And maybe Mina was readily admitting that she found herself sitting on the edge of her seat with much anticipation for the game that was playing before her eyes. Her fingers trembled as she clasped the railings, rooting strongly for Karasuno. She wanted them to win. And she knew the other team's followers were rooting for them too. But there was only to be one victor of this match.
This was that last set to determine the outcome.
If still possible, Mina wanted to apologize to whoever she had thought little of in the sports world. That was childish and plain rude. But how could someone blame a youngling like her who didn't have a proper taste of real sports? All she knew from it was risking it all for a small sliver of chance to win. Not that it sounded like it would garner attraction.
If only her friends could see her right now. That Mina they once knew who couldn't be bothered to give her attention to sports was now in the realm of it, basking under its fervent nature and sharing the same emotions as everyone in the stands. When they frowned, she frowned. When they smiled, she smiled— it was nearly hilarious to see it.
It was set point and match point.
The odds of favour were leaning towards Aoba Jōhsai. Mina didn't like that. Her expression grew dim as her chest pounded heavily as if it was going to burst out. The only times she was ever this upset or nervous to this caliber were usually when she took exams back home. And maybe the entrance examination for Karasuno.
Everyone on the Karasuno team possibly shared the same worries as her. Their faces weren't looking too expressive aside from that growing frown they were soon harbouring. Of course, doubts and concerns and the millions of possibilities this game could play out would have affected them; it was inner turmoil. The chances that they might mess up, accidentally giving leverage to the opposing team, or the fact that their own strength might give out on them, mentally and physically— how worried these guys must've been.
But there was nothing she could do but sit and cheer for them, hoping the best that they could muster.
Nishinoya said something to them. It seemingly brightened up their visages even if it was a small bit, giving them the encouragement they needed to go through the final moments.
And then the ball was back up in the air again. Asahi spiked it with all his might and it went through, touching Aoba Jōhsai's floor. Mina nearly jumped from her seat as she flapped like a fish out of water, a wide grin slowly bursting from the seams of her terribly hidden expression. The Karasuno fans cheered and she did too, clapping like a seal who was going to be fed if it did a trick.
Karasuno's scoreboard flipped to show their hard earned point and everyone's excitement toned down. It was Tanaka's turn to serve it off. That frown he wore deepened by the second, momentarily pausing before he launched the ball up and smacked it. Aoba Jōhsai caught it and soon were they setting it up, letting that turnip-head send their attack. Tanaka managed to save it but his receive was unstable, the ball soaring towards the net.
"Damn it, it's headed straight for the net! They'll slam it back over in first touch!" Takinoue scowled.
She didn't want to think that it was the end of the line for them. The Karasuno boys were so stubborn; even more than a mule probably, as far as she could observe. And that thought was proven when Kageyama reached for the ball just as that brunette she met earlier was about to receive it. Kageyama gritted his teeth and held his arm as high as he could, surprising the latter. He reached it, suddenly and surprisingly setting it up for Hinata.
Wasn't that a sight.
With a single hand, he set the ball up for an attack. Mina could only break out in a throaty chuckle full of disbelief for him when the plan actually worked and they earned a point. The two adults beside her screamed and cheered while pumping their fists. Now, the points were tied.
24-24.
She was slowly growing lightheaded from all the commotion. Rarely had she been in loud venues, always cooped up in that little corner desk of the study room by her cram school back in Korea. The silence there and the single bright light from the lone lamp shining down on her notes; she was familiar with that. Familiar but suffocating. But this, a different pace that was not familiar but it was not suffocating. It was so different from all those times but it was better. Even if she was slowly growing a migraine, it was a good change of pace.
Karasuno might win.
She believed.
