"I knew there was something," Max laughed bitterly and got up with an angry start, wanting nothing more than to distance herself from Jason.
"Max wait..."
"Jason, you are the directors' son. Now director. That's like the equivalent of being a prince, maybe king. Were you ever going to tell me? What mark does a director even have? Are you even an imperfect?" Her thoughts came out in her words all out of order and by the way Jason winced, she knew he didn't want to answer any of them.
"Jason you haven't shown your girl your mark?" Pat perked up at that, but Jason quickly muttered, "Not now Pat."
"Jason..." Max sighed, shaking her head as she stared at his hand.
Jason stared at Luna and she barked once as a signal to go ahead. He took off the glove to the hand without the mark then hesitated before pulling off the glove to his marked hand.
She gaped at the mark and couldn't help but close her hand around her mark even with her gloves on. Her mark was a black outline of a moon colored in blue. His was a blue outline of a crescent moon colored in black. The exact opposite and yet the same. Slowly she took off her own gloves and stared at the same design marks.
"You have the mark of..." Max trailed off, not finding it in her to say it.
"Why do you seem so surprise dear? Everyone knows..." Pat never got to finish his sentence before Jason gladly intervened.
"Nothing! Nothing," Jason quickly filled in, giving Pat a pointed glare.
"Jason, why does my mark match yours?" Max accused, slowly looking from Luna, to Jason, to the two strangers then letting her eyes rest on Jason again.
"Umm...No reason...?"
"It's the mark of the directors," Mrs. Silver whispered, stepping back from the couple.
"And what does that mean Jason?" Max inquired frustratingly, staring at their matching marks.
"Okay, okay. I'll start from the beginning," Jason sighed closing his eyes before looking at her again, full of defeat.
"I sort of... kind of lied. When I saw your mark that day I knew it was the mark of a director. Perfects are stars colored yellow and imperfects are stars colored red as you probably noticed. The mark of directors are blue and a moon. And when the directors' son or daughter is finally old enough to be a director, their... partner's mark will show up...."
"So... why do I have a director's mark?" She asked again, finding it hard to believe.
There was a moment of silence and no one dared moved a muscle, everyone staring at Jason to see how he was going to get out of this one.
"Umm luck...?"
"What he said earlier. You are his significant half, soon to lead with him."
"What!?" Jason and Max shouted at the same time and Jason quickly tried to add, "You don't have to say it like that!..."
"It's true. She's supposedly your other half. She completes you in a sense and he completes you, it is only fitting that you rule together. Both directors..." Mrs. Silver explained, motioning between the two.
"It doesn't work like that and you know it..." Jason's eyes were getting a dark blue as more time went by.
"Then how does it work!?" Max finally let out feeling like ripping her hair out and screaming.
Max didn't dare bother to hear what they had to say. She walked towards the front door to the academy and felt Jason's hand gently grasp her arm.
"Max please wait..."
